  1. Guillaume Cote (National Ballet of Canada) has guested with ABT in the past, so if I were looking for someone I would at least consider him. Toronto audiences love him. http://national.ballet.ca/thecompany/principals/Guillaume_C%C3%B4t%C3%A9/
  2. Just a quick note to say that I located the blog today for tours en l'air - I contacted the "word lady" and she responded quite promptly. Thank you to the originator of this thread - you helped me find something I'd been looking for!
  3. Yes, Tours en L'air is the one I was thinking of! The "word lady" is the person I was trying to describe - you will find her much more articulate! Please let us know if you do decide to go.
  4. I know that there are some tours arranged by a group connected with the National Ballet of Canada, but I don't know the contact information off the top of my head. Will try to look. They have gone to Europe (various countries) and spots in the US. The woman who leads the tours also gives a continuing ed class in Ballet History at the University of Toronto. From time to time she leads ballet talks prior to performances, and I always feel I learn the most when she is speaking. When someone else steps up to the podium it is never the same. I would love to take part in one of the ballet tours some day. I wil post more information if I find it. mom2
  5. Has anyone else here seen a performance? I attended today (Nov. 20), in the middle of the Toronto Santa Claus parade. Would be interested to hear what others have to say. My daughter went last night - her thoughts essentially: "too much fabric." (this is literally, not figuratively). I had to see it to really understand. She was quite on the money I thought. There were pieces to enjoy here, but the set and costumes were not a high point for me - ok, quite the contrary. In some instances these really took us away from the choreography. Of course there were places where the steps were faster and perhaps more "current" with more recent works, but on the whole I'm not sure I'm ready to give up on Cranko just yet. Then again, perhaps this version will mature over time.
  6. Thanks dancemom! I had seen this information on the ABT website. I guess had been wondering about what caused the change, and what has happened to last year's ABTII members who are not listed under Corps or Studio Company. No matter how you slice it however, still a wonderful opportunity for those dancers selected!
  7. Anyone here have news re ABTII (once again Studio Company)? We've had some discussion over on BT4D, with the result that there seems to have been a change in how the Studio Company is described but there isn't anything on the website about it yet. The names for Studio company are (at least) somewhat different for 2011-12 than they were for this past season. One does expect there to be some changes, but these seem more than a typical season to season shift. mom2
  8. Reading the Miami and Oregon news - seems Miami's loss is Portland's gain. Perhaps the question is more - what's up in Miami?
  9. This year there were audience choice awards as well. Winners were: Choreography: Robert Stephen, NBOC Male dancer: Daniel Camargo, Stuttgart Ballet Female dancer: Elisa Badenes, Stuttgart Ballet The voting for the audience choice awards was interesting - we were given what seemed like a nanosecond to send 3 text messages; needless to say my choices didn't get sent. Ah well, next time I will be better prepared!! mom2
  10. I did enjoy, very much. Sadly left a parcel (something I bought at the gift shop) underneath my seat. Honestly. Can't believe it. I fly out tomorrow morning. Lost and found apparently doesn't answer phone calls on the weekend. Any suggestions? Sorry - quite off topic.
  11. I attended last night as well - what a great night of dance! Am a visitor to the city and had not seen the company live before, so it was a real treat. Artifact Suite was wonderful, and all that I had hoped it would be (minus the people leaving early of course). Going tonight for Program 4! How wonderful to be able to go to the ballet on two consecutive nights and see different programs!
  12. Oh My!! I've been busy the last couple of nights, so didn't watch. Never thought that Ms Palin would be still in the competition over Brandy (or some of the others, for that matter). Marga I "ditto" everything you said. m2
  13. Oh Marga - I'm so sad you weren't there, you describe things so much better than I do!!! In addition, I did have an extra ticket at the last minute! Argh!! Dd really liked SFB and SFB/ABT. I enjoyed them of course, but also enjoyed other couples. If you have read Paula Citron's review - we had similar thoughts. Perhaps not so positive about some things, and we definitely observed that the Defile was not rehearsed. Perhaps not at all. Luckily nobody was injured. I'm sure it's difficult when the dancers attending change at moment's notice. Were there reviews other than Citron's? I haven't seen any yet. Would love to hear what others thought. m2
  14. not the government link - but the Washington Post says: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/31/AR2010083104419.html
  15. I also thank you for sharing Dr. Woo's story! The world has clearly lost someone very special. m2
  16. You guys are SO incredibly lucky!! OK, so it's perhaps all the companies and ballets you would have preferred but I think I'll just have to pack my bags for DC!!
  17. My daughter attended last summer, but we have heard nothing about this summer.
  18. Yes, it looks very much like Ballet Girls to me - suspect the footage has been re-worked, to fit cinema format and timing? m2
  19. Here is the article in spanish, from the company website: http://www.balletdc.com/manifiesto.htm They are asking for e-mails of support, and the address to send your support (they only ask for your name) is at the bottom of the page. (I don't think this page has been translated on the website). This is such very sad news. I'm sure that CarolinaM and others closer to Barcelona will be able to give us some further information as time goes on; perhaps there is a plan for some sort of action? mom2
  20. I have e family member in the Met - so for me, the best 5 minutes would be in seeing/hearing her perform. I remember when she chose to pursue opera as a vocation. She had been training in voice of course, doing University and post-graduate work. At some point she had what she described as an "out of body" experience - this level of emotion is what encouraged her to continue with voice over other things. More years later than we would care to acknowledge, she still seems quite content in her choice of career path. I am still looking for that level of fulfillment in my career............. m2
  21. Bravo to all the dancers, but in particular Mr. Smith and Mr. Winchell, who trained in Canada. m2
  22. I too had noticed the changes, wondered about Mara Thompson but haven't been able to google up any news.
  23. Well, I had the tv on for the half hour of the CBS news (though not an NYC station). The only arts-related tidbit was Paul Mc Cartney on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theatre.......did he trump F. Franklin? m2
  24. Nice article, I too am saddened that the author didn't acknowledge the source in some way. m2
