  1. While not a national company, a staff member at Ballet Austin told me that their Nutcracker performances are close to sold-out. The two that I attended were certainly full.
  2. In the program commentary held after the performance, Stephen Mills said they had considered using a live orchestra for his piece but although there were only 2 timpanists, it required 14 timpani! Beyond the problem of trying to find 14 there was just no place to put them. He added that this gave the orchestra time to concentrate on the Webern. I sat next to a gentleman who started softly chuckling from the moment that Episodes began, right through the first three movements (not the Bach). It really changed my perception of the ballet. There are certainly are humorous moments but at that point I wondered if Balanchine was having a little joke on the audience about "serious" ballet.
  3. Here is a review of the performance from the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...71.html?sub=new
  4. I also enjoyed it. I wanted some of the pieces to go on for a longer time, others were just right for the time frame. Overall I came away with a deeper/richer picture of Paris.

    Maybe I'm New

Hello I actually have been reading posts here off and on for many years but I don't think I have ever introduced myself. I started out on this forum but moved to Ballet Talk for Dancers while my sons were growing up. Now one is an apprentice with a regional ballet company and the other is not dancing so I find myself drifing over here to what I think of as the "grown-up" board more often (that is, the board where I can read about dance for my own pleasure ) . 6. Thank-you for all your suggestions! I bought tickets for Friday night after all. My husband and I are going to stay at the Hampton Inn near the conference center (thanks to a good IBM rate) and take the Mann shuttle. I just have to figure out where the nearest stop is - as someone mentioned the shuttle map is not very visitor friendly. Not quite a dance question but what is the "dress code" for these kinds of events at the Mann?
  7. As noted on another thread the Royal Ballet will be performing at the Mann Center in Philadelphia, July 10 - 13. Here are the performances and casting: Tuesday, July 10, 2007 8:00 PM The Royal Ballet - Romeo & Juliet Featuring Principals: Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg Wednesday, July 11, 2007 8:00 PM The Royal Ballet - Romeo & Juliet Featuring Principals: Mara Galeazzi and Edward Watson Thursday, July 12, 2007 8:00 PM The Royal Ballet - Swan Lake Featuring Principals: Tamara Rojo and Federico Bonelli Friday, July 13, 2007 8:00 PM The Royal Ballet - Swan Lake Featuring Principals: Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares Any suggestions on which one to see? I am slightly more inclined to see Romeo & Juliet but could be convinced to see Swan Lake. As we are traveling from the other side of the state I think we will only go to one performance although it is tempting to consider going to both Wednesday and Thursday evenings....
