Here's are the eps from the first season with much of the nonsense cut out. They went from about 40+ min to about 10-13 min. Ep5 was the exception; it was the Performance episodes and that had 22 min of nice content.

I tried to cut out as much of the nonsense as possible and leave as much of the dancing. As a result, there are some bad audio cuts since I didn't want to cut out the accompanying dancing video; I might clean that up if I have some motivation.
As it is, i think a lot more of the actual beauty of the footage they got shows thru and you can actually see some of the sincere moments without being bashed in the face with it.
It makes me a little angry with the producers, though. You can just imagine what wonderful footage they just threw out.

If you take the Breaking Pointe eps and just cut out all the nonsense stuff (relationships, drama, faux conflict/competition, almost everything about Ronnie) and just leave the ballet-centric stuff, you get about 13 min for ep1 and 10 for ep 2.

These are very quick, rough-cuts and so some of the edits are rather abrupt.
Still, taking out all the nonsense and also taking out some of the distracting intercuts with the rehearsal variations, leaves a nugget that is quite interesting...

Sometimes it's important to take a step back and remember WHY humans want to/have to dance.
Matt just restores my faith in humanity. It really made my day.

"Breaking Pointe" is a backstage look at the dancers in Ballet West in Salt Lake City, "one of the most competitive ballet companies in the country." It will focus on the competition and pursuit of perfection among the members of the company. It will premiere at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31.

Here are a couple of clips from PINA. I'm not really that much for modern and particularly not interested in the "weird" high-concept stuff, but this and Dancing Dreamsreally mesmerized me (and curiously Rosas Danst Rosas, also) . It helps that Wim Wenders directed it.

I believe this is a segment from the wonderful film "Balanchine in Paris" made by Dominique Delouche. The film also has some wonderful scenes of Violette Verdy coaching.
EvilNinjaX, I don't have an answer to your question, but I hope someone has. I'd also like to know.
I believe that the Ghislaine Thesmar coaching vid is the only one that is not duplicated in one of the other Dominique Delouche Etoiles Pour L'exemple films. The 2 Violette Verdy vids are from Violette et Mr. B and Comme Les Oiseaux, IIRC.
Though the DVD also has the very nice Journal D'Une Choreographie with Patrick Dupond and John Neumeier. Moderately worth the purchase for someone that already has the 1-4 (or 5) series.

As in your first post, the only thing I wish is they would show more of the dancing... I imagine this season is even better without the Katie/Michael thing and the changes coming because of Ethan.
Were I in charge of producing this show, I would end each ep with 3-5 min of solid dance, either a solid performance piece or a run-thru or a rehearsal or something that has a continuous performance element to it. I would then build the ep to lead up to that and hope to intersperse class and rehearsal bits throughout, perhaps even leading with it. Within that constraint, I would pepper the personality and the drama if spice were needed.
In ep 2, it really would ahve been nice to have had more of Sergio and the "boys" trying to keep up, for instance.
Ah well, you can't have everything!

In case you haven't already seen this video of Ghislaine Thesmar rehearsing Isabelle Ciaravola and Herve Moreau. It's very nice, though admittedly I'm not that familar with Palais Cristal (but I adore the music).
For those knowledgeable here, could you tell me about Palais Cristal and Symphony in C; are they basically the same are was it totally reworked in its new incarnation? thx. (Any other background info on the piece would also be quite welcome.)

It's a nice--albeit short--documentary on a number of impoverished but aspiring South African ballet students in their attempt to join the The Youth Company in Cape Town. It is quite a nice documentary that is a nice complement to 2 thematically similar documentaries ONLY WHEN I DANCE and the non-dance HBO documentary A SMALL ACT.

I don't suppose many here watch Japanese dramas (J-Dorama), but there was one on a while back called PRIMADAN that was about Ballet, mostly adult ballet students. It's silly and a touch melodramatic, but admirably manages at times to honestly capture the love and joy of ballet. And it is a joy to see Bejart danseur Kobayashi Juichi on screen; I just wish he would dance more!
