  1. I do hope you will share your impressions. I know they are debuting a few pieces tonight but not sure which ones. I am looking forward to seeing "Milk Pool", "Tarentella", "Staged Fright", and "Monotones" sometime this week. Will anyone also be attending the Ailey 2 performances? t :cat:
  2. I didn't see the link to this review for Dance Arriba! on any other forum so thought I would share it here. Did anyone attend personally? I heard that Sonia Manzano really had the crowd pumped up and was a great MC. t :cat:
  3. We were unable to attend last evening's performance due to weather concerns for our return trip. I do hope someone will be able to share their thoughts on any of the performances. t :cat:
  4. August 8, 2003 review in the New York Times by Jack Anderson. I didn't see the above link or review on any other board or thread so I thought I would share it here. t :cat:
  5. Thanks Dale. There are a handful of Ballet Alertnics who are getting together briefly before the first show for some schmoozing. "ABT NYC get together" is a link where we are all coordinating our pre-performance visit. There are kids as young as 11 yo that will be performing that day. I guess anyone attending and then sharing there impressions of the performance(s) should try to handle it a like SAB Student Workshop reviews. merde to all of the dancers t :cat:
  6. I cannot post an objective review of either of the Saturday SAB Student Workshop Performances that I attended. I will say that I enjoyed myself completely and preferred this year's performances over last year's. I can clarify that due to Zlato Fagundes injury: Tyler Angel took his place in the Saturday matinee Chopiniana . Choong Hoon Lee took his place in the role of the Catalabutte in both performances of The Sleeping Beauty. Ted Seymour took his place in the evening performance of Swan Lake pdd from Act 2. For the folks who enjoyed the Ballabile from Act 1 of Naopli, I believe it was the impressive jumps of Jermel Johnson that drew the positive attention of so many, including myself. The extra long break during the first intermission for the Saturday evening performance was due to a breakdown in communication between the stage and the house management. The dancers were also very tuned in to the timing of the show and found the wait difficult. Alexandra, I do know that Likolani Brown has attended SAB for the past 2 years. Congratulations to every one of the hard working dancers at SAB and merde to those who will perform tonight. t
  7. I hadn't posted on the missing thread but I have copied some info from the SAB web page. 8. I had tickets to the pre-performance lecture by a panel of dancers who have all danced in Romeo and Juliet in the past. It was a nice spread of perspectives from Clinton Luckett (10 years plus with the company) to Craig Salstein (first year with the company). Ashley Tuttle and Joaquin De Luz shared some wonderful insights from their past performances in Romeo and Juliet. One challenge the dancers shared was the venue of Kennedy Center's Concert Hall. With the orchestra being behind the dancers, they noted a few difficulties in not being able to take visual cues from the conductor and the other way around. With no front curtain, nor wing curtains, nor drops the set for the entire ballet was much more rigid and added some challenges in that respect also. Some of the dancers were also a bit unnerved with how close they actually were to the audience. Being able to see faces and human actions in the audience made it more difficult for some to project out and up. The panel also took on a few questions at the end of the talk, one of which asked how dedicated ABT was to sticking to Kenneth MacMillan's choreography. They shared that they are very dedicated to keeping it true mentioning that it was carefully chosen who recently set the choreography on the dancers (it had been few years since ABT has performed R&J) and that Mrs. MacMillan still occasionally attends ABT's performances. I enjoyed the performance. The Verona market place was highlighted by some great corp sword play. At the end of this scene, the company deftly stood around the "dead" during the black out so they could discretely exit. I felt they handled the fact of not having any curtain very well throughout the performance. Xiomara Reyes debut as Juliet was stunning from beginning to end. She started out convincing me she was a spirited 14 year old sprite and by the end of the performance that she carried the weight of a young lady who had seen to much tragedy for someone her age. Angel Corella's Romeo was in good form by never disappointing the audience with his sharp chainés and beautiful attitude turns. The pas de trio prior to the Ballroom seemed a bit unbalanced. Herman Cornejo's Mercutio was technically razor sharp throughout the entire performance (so glad they gave the lead in the Mandolin Dance back to Mercutio this run). Sascha Radetsky's first shot at Benvolio was a bit bland. He was technically not as clean as his other 2 Montague buddies and eventually blended into the background. The balcony pas de deux was lovely but seemed just a hair rushed in a few places. Might this because the orchestra was behind the stage? I did notice conductor David LaMarche paying close attention by looking over his shoulder during the end of Act ll but was too caught up in the dancing to notice during the balcony pas. Other dancers that stood out in this performance were Erica Cornejo (Harlot) and Misty Copeland (Juliet's Friend). ABT's corp has always impressed me and they did so even more this performance. It is my pleasure to see a corp that works as a corp instead of a group of individuals as I have seen in NYCB. t
  9. Monday, June 3, 2002 7:00 pm I can reiterate what I hinted to earlier, central Pennsylvania is thrilled to know 3 of the 2002 Mae L. Wien Award winners very intimately. Gina Pazcoguin, Tyler Angle , and Allen Peiffer are all from central PA. Along with the fourth of the award winner, Jessica Flynn, they danced what my friend called, "A Wien worthy" performance. t
  10. Amanda, did you attend both of the Saturday performances or which cast did you see? I am very excited to be attending the performance tomorrow (Monday 7pm) and am looking forward to reading about impressions of yesterday's performances (Saturday 2pm and 8pm). Central PA is just bursting with pride over a handful of young dancers in this year's SAB Student Workshop! t

    Miranda Weese

Sadly, I just heard that she recently injured her hip. She won't be dancing for couple of months. I will miss seeing her as the Sugar Plum Fairy this Dec. t
