  1. I have too many PDD favorites to name, but one that is often overlooked is the first PDD in Manon. The second PDD is wonderful, but there's something unforgettably special about watching Des Grieux and Manon fall in love to that exquisitely poignant music of Massenet. MacMillan impassioned and acrobatic choreography in this piece I never tire of watching. Other favorites include Balanchine's Tchaikovsky PDD, Robbins's In The Night and Nureyev's Vision PDD from Raymonda. Watch Dupont/Bart dance the Raymonda on youtube and see what I mean.
  2. My first ballet love was in the late '70's seeing Suzanne Farrell dance in Vienna Waltzes. Her solo and duet with Adam Luders in Der Rosenkavalier was magical. Farrell's beauty, charisma and stage presence projected all the way to the top balcony. I wish her performance on Live From Lincoln Center was made available on dvd.
  3. If only!!!!!!!!! Hear, hear!
  4. A memoir/autobiography of the incomparable Vladimir Vasiliev would be fantastic.
  5. I was on vacation when Osipova danced with ABT. Please share with me your reveiws of her performances. Thank you!
  6. Thank you for the wonderful article, Mashinka!
  7. Does anyone know if it's possible to send notes of condolence to Vladimir Vasiliev? Can it be done care of The Bolshoi?
  8. Can anyone recommend recordings for the following Rimsky-Korsakov pieces: Tsar Sultan Capriccio Espagnol Coq d'Or Thank you!
  9. I recently watched on VHS a fantastic documentary called "The Hermitage: A Russian Odyssey" from the mid '90's. Besides the history and sublime art, I fell in love with the musical chosen for the program. Of the Russian music, it was easy to pick out the Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev. But I had a harder time recognizing a symphonic piece (a slow movement) that sounded like Shostakovich and was featured prominently in episodes 2 and 3. Does anyone know what this piece was? Also, I recognized Arensky's Piano Trio No. 1; can anyone recommend a recording of this work? Thank you!
  10. Oh no, I can't believe this news. Katya Maximova was one of the most sublime and legendary dancers of the 20th century. Her Juliet, Aurora, Kitri, Masha and Phrygia were unforgettable. I always marveled at her gorgeous legs, amazing arched feet, and beautiful extension. Then of course there is is her magical partnership with her husband Vladimir Vasiliev. I could go on for pages about that. They were stunning and profound in everything they did together. Theirs was one of the great romances in ballet history. Their deep chemistry jumped off the stage/tv screen when they were performing or in interviews. My heart bleeds for her husband who must be crushed by her loss. Volodya was so deeply in love with Katya -- God help him through this devastating time. Oh dear, now I'm actually sobbing. If anyone knows the cause of her death, please share it with us.
  11. CNN just reported that Natasha Richardson passed away earlier today as a result of her head injury. My prayers go out to her entire family. This is so tragic. I'll never forget the first time I saw her in an episode of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" starring the great Jeremy Brett in 1985. Natasha Richardson must have been about only about 21 years old at the time and her performance was superb. I knew I was watching a great actress in the making. RIP Natasha.
  12. I recently rented this dvd and loved it. Nurueyev's staging is lovely and so original in many dances. Why doesn't the POB film it? After seeing Aurelie Dupont dance the Adage de Vision on youtube, I'm convinced that she would be my choice to dance the title role.
  13. Unfortunately, Don Q isn't part of the 2009 Met season.
  14. Which ballets would it be better to see Natalia Osipova in at ABT this Summer: Giselle or Airs/La Sylphide?
  15. I may have 1 ticket available for Cecilia Bartoli's concert at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, March 3 at 8 PM with the Orchestra La Scintilla. The location of the seat is Section CB3, Row H, Seat 9. The price I'm asking is $60. I'll know definitely by this evening if this ticket is available. If you have questions, please contact Melissa at lilylady732@yahoo.com
  16. Tanaquil LeClerq is the most glamorous ballerina I've ever seen. There's nobody out there to match her past or present.
  17. I just read on the Los Angeles Times website that Emmy Award-winning actor Patrick McGoohan of "Secret Agent", "The Prisoner" and "Braveheart" fame, died peacefully yesterday at a Santa Monica, CA hospital after a short illness. He was 80 years old. Mr. McGoohan was my favorite actor for his entire body of work, not just the 2 tv series in the 1960's that made him a star. He was immensely and uniquely talented as an actor/writer/director and had tremendous integrity about his craft. He will be sorely missed.
  18. Can anyone recommend a recording of Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnole? Thank you in advance.
  19. "Irregardless" and "Ax" instead if "Ask" drive me crazy!
