  1. Does anybody know if the calendar for the Kirov's performances at the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg is set yet for 2003-04, where it can be found if so, or when it might be posted/published?
  2. Forgive me if this wanders a bit off topic... The use of the torso is visible even in the students, even when they are not on stage. I went to a student performance in St Petersburg this fall, and it was immediately clear who the dancers were. Some video I saw once had a teacher telling students that they should practically never be facing/looking directly front. About architecture: I recall hearing or reading somewhere a description of the street where the Vaganova school is located as "the most perfect street in Europe" because the height of the buildings is the same as the width of the street. It is indeed beautiful, and in fact the Alexandrinsky Theater, which is at one end of the street (Theater Street/Rossi Street) is IMHO a much prettier and more elegant theater from the outside than the Mariinsky.
  3. I really like seeing dancers I "know" in both the "seen them before and can readily ID them" sense and the "have met them" sense. For example, it was a delight to watch Polyana Ribiero rise through the ranks at Boston Ballet. Now that I am in DC, it is possible to watch Washington Ballet this way. Similarly, as I have gotten to know the young people at the place where I take adult classes better, it has become much more interesting and enjoyable to watch them perform. In fact, I find that watching them more sharpens my sense of their strengths and weaknesses. Of course, it is also nice to be in a place where a very wide variety of top-notch companies can be seen, though I do sometimes feel a bit "lost" when looking at the names in the program. It would be hard to choose between seeing a performance by a new, unfamiliar company and an additional performance by a familiar one.
