Right, Drew. The music for specific numbers, such as Tea & her entourage, goes on too long. But what to cut? In total (minus the intermission), the ballet clocks in at only 70 minutes. Cut one dance and it barely qualifies as a "full evening" work. Ratmansky uses every bit of the music, exactly in the order intended. It absolutely helped that I familiarized myself with the score ahead of time, by listening to the Japanese CD two dozen times. So much of it seemed undanceable before I saw the ballet but Ratmansky worked wonders.

Still longer than La Sylphide which NYCB clocked in at 60 minutes with no intermission, and many companies perform as stand-alone full-evening work with one intermission.

  2. Ratmansky mentioned in an earlier interview there will be a reconstruction at ABT in 2018.

And Ratmansky will stage Bayadere in Berlin 17/18 season: http://www.berliner-zeitung.de/kultur/theater/staatsballett-das-sind-die-plaene-der-designierten-intendanten--26811508

Will the reconstruction for ABT be Bayadere co-produced with Berlin?  I can't imagine ABT would jettison its iconic 38-year old production.

How is Devon Teuscher only a soloist???

Thursday's Swan Lake was absolutely great (by elite ballet company standards). A much more dramatic, emotional performance by Marcelo Gomes and an excellent performance by Devon Teuscher (even managing to keep the fouettes in a perfectly straight line). The 1st ballerina in the pas de troix was also impressive.

I wish I were there to witness the a-star-is-born moment.

On the flip side of "How is Devon Teuscher only a soloist???" is "How is Hee Seo a principal???"

Oh well I am uncertain that the mess was Mr. Kobberg's fault or if it was the new AD's fault. Seems like a lot of "nativism" going on.  If all ballet companies operated that way, Petipa would never have been hired at the Maryinsky, nor Balanchine at Ballet Society / NYCB, etc..

Balanchine founded NYCB and its predecessors so he needed not to be hired by them.
