  1. I went to Sunday Matinee performance too. (I sat in upper tiers, so I do not want to comment on what happened in orchestra stalls. But yes, it was Forsythe who came out during the second bow.)

The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude (Hannah Galway, Jeannine Haller, Jordana Daumec, Skylar Campbell, Brendan Saye)

Maybe it is the music and the tutus, it gave me an impression of Forsythe style in a more classical form. Brendan Saye was gorgeous. He has a perfect body, superb musicality and stage presence. Skylar Campbell was quick and light as a feather, as he always was.

The three ballerinas were average, I have to say. They worked through those quick footworks, but not very exactly. And their phrasing has nothing special.

Bravo to the minimalistic costumes by Stephen Galloway. Simple, modern, elegant and unpretentious.

Approximate Sonata 2016 (Sonia Rodriguez and Donald Thom, Xiao Nan Yu and Brent Parolin, Greta Hodgkinson and Kota Sato, Chelsy Meiss and Guillaume Côté)

I did not get the choreography itself for this first view. I will try again on Wednesday for another cast.

Xiaonan Yu and Greta Hodgkinson did not have the attack for Forsythe, which is understandable considering their age. I liked 4th Sonata by Chelsy Meiss and Guillaume Côté the most. They showed me the energy and humour that I linked with Forsythe. Sonia Rodriguez was impressive in 5th Sonata.

    The Second Detail

My favorite piece of the triple bill. With more dancers, there were more diverse body movement, more complex stage geometry and more humorous correspondence.

Due to the weird casting list, I can not tell all the dancers. I recognized Greta Hodgkinson, Sonia Rodriguez, Chelsy Meiss, and Félix Paquet.

I loved Sonia Rodriguez and Chelsy Meiss in this piece. They had the athletic lines and energy for “attack”. They also showed more playfulness and joy of dance on stage.

No wonder Rodriguez was chosen to feature the poster. She can definitely tackle Forsythe.

I'm so jealous!  Have a wonderful time!

By the way, if you happen to be in NY in early July, top dancers from the RDB will be performing at the Joyce.  I saw them the last time they were here, and it was a lovely program.  You won't have the beautiful scenery as with a full company in larger venue, but the Joyce is a lovely intimate theater.

Below is the information from the Joyce website:

The Bournonville Legacy - JUL 9–14

Top dancers of the Royal Danish Ballet, revered as the world’s third oldest ballet company, come together to bring the best of August Bournonville to The Joyce. Featuring distinctive repertoire from classical ballets such as La Sylphide, Napoli, and A Folktale.

Thank you so much for the recommendation, @NinaFan

Joyce Theater has such a brilliant program including the Australian Ballet, Maria Kochetkova Gala, Ballet Festival curated by Kevin O’Hare featuring Lauren Cuthbertson and Edward Watson.  https://joyce.org/performances

As a non-New Yorker, I had not even heard about it.

The cast of April 9 performance:

    Conrad: Timur Askerov

    Medora: Maria Khoreva

    Ali: Kimin Kim

    Gulnara: Nadezhda Batoeva

    Lankedem: Alexei Timofeyev

    Birbanto: Yuri Smekalov

    Said Pasha: Soslan Kulaev

I will have to look at the playbill to post the names of character dancers as I don’t remember them.

    Thanks for sharing, Dreamer.

    Just FYI:

    1) I don't often sit in the orchestra, but when I do I actually prefer to be further back because the rake is a little better that it is in the rows closer to the stage. (I also prefer sitting further back and a it off center to get a better view of the choreographic patterns, but that's a matter of personal taste.)

    2) Also, if you ever want to see what the view is like when you are buying NYCB tickets, all you have to do is go to a date on the performance calendar, click on buy tickets, go to the section of the house that you're interested in, and then, when taken to the seating chart, click on the little camera icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen to enable a bunch of clickable camera icons spread over the seating chart. Click on one of those, and it will show you the view from that part of the house. (I hope that's clear!)

Thank you so much, Kathleen. It's clear enough.

I hear that many ballet fans like sitting on the higher tiers to get the big picture of the choreography. I will try that on single tickets.

I have sat in the rear orchestra many times, including Row R and the rows behind it. I find the view of the stage to be fine, and I'm short. The seats are staggered enough that even if someone tall is in front of me, I can usually see around them.

Thank you for the reply. In fact, I have ordered a new subscription of Orchestra C. The previous info scared the hell out of me.

I also found a picture of Row U. It seems tolerable. https://aviewfrommyseat.com/photo/68960/David+H.+Koch+Theater/section-Orchestra/row-U/seat-115/anonymous-20170403171502.jpg

I would be wary of the very back center of the orchestra (well behind the horizontal aisle). I had seats there and could barely see the stage. I don't think the people in front of me were particularly tall either. I ended up standing by the doors.

Do you mean Orchestra C, Row R?

Seems I really need some advice on seating of David Koch Theater. I have never been there before...

Ah yeah, I don't see that anywhere obvious on the website. I'd call the box office, if that's not too annoying.

    In fact, I called.

I didn't ask about Orchestra A since I cannot afford those.

Orchestra B is the mid-back area till Row Q and orchestra sides from No.5.

Orchestra C is Row R on two sides and Row S-U all.

Orchestra D is Row J-O sides from about No.20.

If you do a Google image search for "Koch Theater seating chart" you can see the entire layout — not sure if that's what you meant.

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I searched. The picture I attached is one of the results with 5 divisions.

But NYCB only provide 4 divisions in the subscription. Since I am considering Orchestra C, I am not sure where this category is located.

  13. As I heard Lee Soo-bin (winner of Vaganova Prix and silver of moscow ballet competition) joined the company recently, I really want to watch her performance in Giselle.

I asked about the casting 5 minutes ago, then I found it for recent Coppelia: https://www.bostonballet.org/Home/The-Company/Dancers/2018-2019-Season-Casting/coppelia-Casting

Other repertoire's casting can also be found by changing the link title.
