  1. Wow! I would never have even guessed that. Granted that I pay far more attention to the female dancers than the men, I did not notice that this Solor was such a marathon or had a wealth of bravura steps. I'm going to youtube to do variation comparisons, because I get the feeling the difficulty may have been stepped down. Thanks for the insight!
  2. For Hoven, maybe... though, running out of gas at 32? Solor is no Siegfried or Espada, right? Met performances aside, Ahn was competent but his jumps were NOT particularly high or explosive and his arabesques were not quite 90 degrees, despite the thunderous applause from the LA audience. I'm nitpicking here, of course, but isn't that where we find the difference between the good and the great?
  3. You are EXACTLY right!! I hadn't noticed him in previous performances and jumped right to the conclusion that he was an import. My deepest apologies for the error...but why they'd cast a corp member instead of superior soloist for such a coveted role baffles me!
  4. One last bit I needed to say.... Joo Won Ahn was a fine Solor, but he bought NOTHING to the role that Tom Forester or Blaine Hoven would have missed. It's time for ABT to use the excellent resources at their disposal and stop with the needless imports.
  5. I was in the third row at Sundays matinee and can absolutely agree with your take on Shevchenko. Her acting chops, technical precision and STUNNING beauty truly set her apart from the other "Principals" at ABT right now. I expect that time and dedication will hone her precision into virtuosity in the future and put her in league with the worlds truly great dancers. She had some shaky moments in her beginning act variations but her extensions were beautiful. Her 15 fouettes were tight and stable with little movement and she finished with a nice triple but even here i noticed a little hesitancy. I noticed the same from the lovely Devon Teuscher, who danced a superb Nikiya with dramatic flair. During the Death scene, the pained look on her face when Solor walked away from her was heart-breaking. She was a little shaky throughout, although she moved lusciously with high legs and deep bends. No Tereshkina balances in Act 2, but at 29, she has time to develop this key role.

  7. I'm with you 1,000%!! It's packaged disappointment or WORSE, like in 2016, when I begrudgingly spent $200 per ticket for Tour de Force III and Vishneva CANCELLED!!!
  8. Tickets for Natalia Osipova are on sale now. http://www.scfta.org/home/emails/Isadora1819OnSale/index.html?utm_source=Email_marketing&utm_campaign=Eblast_IsadoraOnSale1&cmp=1&utm_medium=HTMLEmail I would have been first in line if she were coming with Don Q, Flames of Paris, La Fille or ANY other CLASSICAL work. This feels like side-line, experimental type stuff she's trying for fun. Not sure it'll be worth the $200 a real ticket will be worth... The remarkable life of modern dance revolutionary Isadora Duncan is brought center stage in this highly-anticipated WORLD PREMIERE. A California native, Duncan revolutionized the world of Dance, rejecting the formal language of ballet to forge a new art form of modern movement. Her infamous death was as dramatic as her life. Her story is truly one for the stage. 9. I've only been attending Ballet since the mid 90's, but individual dancers, instead of companys, have always been my focus. Since no one posts casting until a few weeks before performance (at best), the subscription model always seemed silly to me. This is what frustrates me about LA Ballet. All due respect to BB, but buying a ticket to a show feels like rolling the dice at Caesars Palace to see if you get Petra Conti or Bianca Bulle (LA Ballet NEVER posts casting.) So few people buy subscriptions that getting a decent, last-minute, Prime Orchestra seat isn't very difficult. Of course, this may not be the case in other, more ballet-centric cities.
  10. Why did you have to bring THAT up?!!! I feel like cancelling my subscription support and moving to New Zealand just to spite McKenzie... http://rnzb.org.nz/news/rnzb-welcomes-international-guest-artist-veronika-part-for-dancing-with-mozart-season/
  11. Casting for ABT's La Bayadère at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles is out! Sunday is my huckleberry!!! Teuscher & Shevchenko are the Wonder twins of technique and expressive beauty. Murphy's Gamzatti is brilliant, but I'm going to have to miss it this time. I'm figuring ABT should be strategic and cast Copeland as Nikiya to avoid Gamzatti's fouettés...just saying... PRINCIPAL CASTING Friday, July 13 @ 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14 @ 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15 @ 2:00 p.m. Isabella Boylston Hee Seo Devon Teuscher Alban Lendorf Cory Stearns Joo Won Ahn Misty Copeland Gillian Murphy Christine Shevchenko Casting subject to change.

    Hello All!

My name is Leo, I live in LA and I've been an avid Ballet goer for ~20 years. That being said, ballets are few and far between here and good companies are rare visitors. ABT pays a visit annually and more if i'm willing to travel an hour south to the Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC), where ABT recently opened a JKO School satellite. It's also the home of ABT's Nutcracker residence. Colleen Neary's LA Ballet has good moments, but principal losses have turned it into a vehicle for Guest Ballerinas. Not that I'm upset that Petra Conti and Misa Kurananga are here on occasion, but since their website doesn't post casting, buying a ticket feels like dropping $100 coins into a slot machine. There are great moments here, though. Diana Vishneva, The Eifman, and the Mariinsky companies are fairly regular to OCPAC. I grew up dancing Salsa and, at my zenith, was a decent intermediate dancer. Although Salsa as a discipline is a JOKE compared to classical ballet, it did intimately inform me of what my body was capable of doing. This small bit of knowledge has made me appreciate the WONDER that professional ballet dancers become and how difficult it really is to make torturously difficult and intricately complex choreography look effortless. I stare in awe of corps members and the strength, concentration and dedication they posses to express their art at that level. I'm happy to find a place where others think the same way!
