I remember seeing an announcement of his retirement from SAB years ago and thinking he was awfully young to retire as a teacher. Yes, very sad.

His leaving NYCB/SAB as staff a few years ago was related to other matters, come more publicly to light since all the Peter Martins allegations.

That has been my experience with this ballet as well. I have only ever seen shorter girls that get cast in this ballet (Hilton, M Fairchild, Bouder). Suzanne Farrell danced the role, but she seems to be the exception.

I don't think someone mentioned this already-- but Darci Kistler was the primary person to do the female role for many years and did so beautifully, and she was a taller dancer.

Yeah, right. How interesting that my (our) three choices for potentially-salvageable Repertory works are the three cited by Stafford:

    Barber Violin

    Fearful Symmetries

    Hallelujah Junction

Out of 75-plus rep works (all of Peter Martins’ oeuvre beside restagings of 19th-C classics), these three ballets are cited. Slim pickings, in other words. “That’s all, folks!” said Bugs Bunny.

I like Ash, though I think it's a dancer killer.

If it's what was telecast, I believe that was only starting from the PDD through the end. (It's on YT with Kistler and Zelensky.)

Most of the works that were done for that particular program were excerpted, around 10 min. each.

But they may well have done the complete work in other performances that season, if that's what you mean.

I meant throughout that entire spring season, which was a wonderful crash course in Balanchine. The telecast was the final performance.

I don't care for the first few movements of Suite No. 3, but in my 30 years of ballet going I've only seen NYCB perform the Suite in its entirety. What an interesting idea. It would make it more like ABT, though.

I think they did T&V on its own during the Balanchine Celebration in '93.  There were many things brought back for just that season I wouldn't mind seeing again, not that I recall any ballet names.

Sleeping Beauty is less offensive, but perhaps more disappointing because of all the cuts and odd pacing. Canbelto, I think you once called it a "drive-through Sleeping Beauty," which is such an apt description.

I actually love this production of SB for that very reason.  I'm of a Balanchine pace, and so typically full-lengths are just not my cup-of-tea. I realize it may seem like reading the cliff notes than reading a book to some, but you still get Petipa's (and Balanchine's choreography) and numerous moments for corps in soloist roles to shine.

I think, perhaps, this production of SB is so much better than Martins' other productions because... he interjected less of himself and his tastes in it!

Both Applebaum and Scordato were very good in Divertimento and I agree worthy of promotion.

I have appreciated both men in the past, but they really were superb in Divertimento -- graceful, with ease, and engaged-- and quite a contrast to Veyette.  I have been a fan of Veyette's generally-- but this performance, like others said, was so very labored. It marred an otherwise splendid performance of the ballet.

  8. To those who asked about the Janice Levin dancer --  The person is honored at the annual Guild luncheon usually held around Valentine's Day, and then that's when the name usually goes in the program.  Always a corps member, as it's meant for an up-and-coming dancer.  Sometimes dancers are so up-and-coming, they skip right over that award or get promoted within the year.

On the casting sheet, for Divertimento No. 15, how are the dancers ordered, in relation to their variations in the second movement?

    Would it be this?

    1. Gordon and Sanz
    2. Woodward
    3. Pereira
    4. Phelan
    5. Isaacs
    6. Finlay
    7. Bouder

Should be. They usually do list the women in order of variation, and the first man is the lead.

  10. She will do La Source. I remember reading on her Twitter page a few weeks ago that she was rehearsing La Source.

If only she could do both the soloist and principal roles. How can anyone in attendance ever forget her debut in the soloist role?

-amanda, who hasn't posted in quite awhile... she was off becoming a mom

  11. Remember me? I went off and had a baby, and so don't get to too many perfs anymore. Anyway, I have tix for tonight's Beauty with Bouder. My "date" had to cancel, so now I have an available ticket.

    Second ring, 7pm perf

Free, though donations to my son's college fund won't be turned away. My priority, however, is just to make sure such a good seat for a bouder perf doesn't go to waste

Send me a private message if interested, even if it gets late in the day. Don't assume it is taken.

  12. Despite the fact that I paid for my subscription several months ago, I still have not received my subscription tickets. Moreover, this was an exact renewal of seats I have had for years. I called the subscription office and was told that they have not yet mailed out all subscription tickets. Not a good way to conduct business, in my opinion. Time to get their act together. Has anyone else received their subscription tixs yet?

They traditionally send the tickets only a few weeks before the season begins, regardless of when you order.

  13. Outside of that, I think the only other principals and soloists not listed are J. Stafford, R. Fairchild and Craig Hall.

At a recent NYCB seminar, Jonathan Stafford said he would be out this season, as he was having an operation (don't recall on what part of the body, but the seminar is available in 3 parts on the NYCB website).

  14. Beware. NYCB's press release was apparently not proofread, and contained the incorrect date for the Special One Time Only salute to SAB. The correct date is Wed Jan 14, not Feb 14 (which falls on a Sat.).

That's good to know, as I had told my husband we'd have to do Valentine's Day dinner another night. :FIREdevil:

  15. The first Dancers' Emergency Fund program was held on February 24, 1985. There were a total of ten, held annually, the last in 1994. In his speech, the Ballet Master in Chief said they'd been money-losers. I don't quite understand the full meaning of this, but would assume that it did NOT mean that each resulted in a DROP in funds available for dancers.

At least the last few held after I started attending NYCB perfs were on Sunday nights, in place of the 7pm perf (back when there was a 1pm and 7pm perf on Sundays). I'd say that would be the worst time for a dance event, and the timing was probably one of the reasons they didn't fill the theaters then (at least they weren't full when I went). It's one thing to have the Balanchine Celebration final event last hours upon hours into a Sunday night; it's another to have a random grouping of excerpts-- without the sexiness of 'dancer's choice' at that time.

As for the Froman photos-- I haven't 'thought' much about them until now, and had simply gone with my gut reaction, which was that they were really cool. I believe I read somewhere that the girls in the orchestra were supposed to have the effect like they were rippling down the seats. Can't say I perceived it that way, but I just thought all of the photos were fun-- a different way of seeing the dancers. While some may perceive the girls/orchestra photo and quote as against each other, some could also say it was ironic. Froman commented how he wanted to show how the dancers are inseparable from the theater, they are a foundation and part of it. I went with that in looking at all the photos.
