Managed to catch up on the first episode. It assumes the viewer knows what’s going on and is familiar with the IMDb summary of who Fosse and Verdon are, so knows, for example, why there was some awkwardness when “Shirley” appeared in the Sweet Charity filming scene. That being said, Michelle Williams is doing a great job in the role so far, at least as far as the acting goes. Next week is supposed to flashback to Damn Yankees, so we’ll see if we get Who’s Got The Pain or Whatever Lola Wants.

I agree with Josette. The last time I saw him live, he looked haggard and like he was going through the motions, and the recent vids don’t seem to indicate a reversal. It’d be one thing if Polunin was someone who was a professional who honors his commitments and puts in an effort in his performances, but that hasn’t been the case. Many times, erratic behavior spills into professional life and I think Polunin’s half hearted performances and frequent cancellations reflect his character Anyway, The only place he does classical these days is Munich. He is more focused on his vanity pieces, so any appearance is probably not going to be classical.

Alan Cumming was the highlight for me. While a lot more camp than Joel Grey’s Emcee, there was still something unsettling beneath it all. I kind of saw Grey’s Emcee as the devil while Cumming’s as more of a haunting theatre ghost The look and feel was somewhat more sinister. The ending also was stunning to say the least. When the Emcee opens his coat the theatre went completely silent.

I saw Michelle when she was in Cabaret. She did better with the gloomier songs like “Maybe this time” than she did with the more showy numbers.

According to interviews, they aren’t going to gloss over the unsavory aspects of Fosse’s life like All That Jazz did. I’m not sure what relationship Nicole had with her parents but judging from articles I don’t think it will be another Mommy Dearest.

The promos for this have been popping up on my feeds and it looks very interesting. Its 8 episodes and stars Sam Rockwell as Bob Fosse and Michelle Williams as Gwen Verdon. Although this FX series isn’t being helmed by Ryan Murphy, who did the fabulous Versace, OJ, and Feud series, Nicole Fosse is one of the producers, along with Lin Manuel Miranda

And for all his protestations that he wants to innovate ballet, I find that he looks the same in every new video I see. On the other hand, his upcoming appearance in Munich sold out. It could be that people are more willing to see him in a tried and true show like Spartacus vs one of his vanity projects Osipova and Hallberg’s show is also suffering similar problems in the box office in NY so maybe fans are reluctant after the last two shows with Polunin got lukewarm responses. Which is sad because Osipova was fantastic in both. It’s just the choreo was awful and Polunin really looked like he was phoning it in both times.

There werent a lot of on stage scenes but the class and rehearsal scenes in the latter part of the film are very good. Isaeva is quite lovely, especially when rehearsing with Le Riche. I also forgot to mention Alexander Domogarov is in this film as a once promising dancer now drunk strip club manager/patron. I didn’t recognize him at all. I used to have a huge crush on him when he did Banditsky Peterburg

I stumbled upon this when looking for some commute viewing. The movie is about some girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is trying to become a star at the Bolshoi and stars real life dancers. The protagonist was played by Margarita Simonova of the Polish National Ballet, her frenemy is played by Anna Isaeva, who danced for Gordeev and the Kremlin. Nicolas Le Riche plays an international superstar on the verge of retirement. There are also current Bolshoi artists in the background like Artur Mkrtchyan As far as tone goes, it can be summed up by the speech at the end, to paraphrase , “you dance Odette/Odile tonight, tomorrow you go back to the corps. You have to work hard just like at the academy”. So neither Center Stage nor Flesh and Bone in the way it looks at ballet. All in all, it wasn’t bad The film is confusing in the way it jumps from time periods. One minute it’s the present day where she is having a press conference, the next, it’s back 15 years in time. And many of the subplots aren’t developed, like Le Riche’s character’s romantic history. Or, if the Isaeva character forgot how she came to dance the lead in the graduation performance, why has she been supporting the Simonova character’s career. However, the characters are interesting and likeable and it moves quickly. Not a bad movie for a daily commute

I was lucky enough to win a lottery and did the two parts in one day option. I had read the published script and thought it was mediocre fan fiction, but the story really does come alive when on stage. Yes the dialogue is corny, but all the actors were great and the effects were amazing. In the movies, you assume it’s CGI, but when someone transfigured right on stage, you were like “how’d they do that”. The audience at the showing I went to was definitely comprised of fans. Lots of people in robes, lots of spontaneous reactions to references to the original series. As a fan of the books, I would say that yes, the plot is a bit silly and the way the original characters were presented doesn’t seem to jive with how they were presented in the books. And yes, Ron is still being treated as nothing more than comic relief. And yes, the big reveal is bad fan fiction. But it is still very entertaining and it did not feel like I spent 5 hours.
