  1. Thanks for your review, California! I did not see the CO performances, so can't comment on these dancers, but viewed the Finnish production when it was streaming last year. I confess I really liked the opening scene in the madhouse, though very modern dance. And then the way the conventional narrative devolved into something more on the psychological plane as Jekyll (and Hyde!) began to lose control was really, really clever. I would definitely seek out more by this choreographer, and hope I'll get to see J&H in person someday.
  2. My memory failed me. I thought they had done it last year. However, with just a one-year gap, my question would have still remained. So, I'm grateful for the answers! I'm going to check out the Amazon version. I find myself really interested in the modern ballets, like Casanova, or this year's Jekyll and Hyde, that regional companies do to garner audience interest. (And hopefully create ballet lovers who will go to Balanchine, etc.!) It seems really prudent for companies outside a major metropolitan area to pursue these. Can you view public television offerings like this if you are not in the same region?
  3. Interesting that they're repeating Petite Mort. I guess that makes sense when you spend the time and effort setting the ballet--why not do it again? The audience is now more familiar and the dancers can only get better, right? Are ballets like this often contracted for a certain set of years? This is so interesting to me. Also, does anyone know where I can see a performance of Casanova online? I'm entirely unfamiliar with this ballet. There is a version available on Amazon prime, but the details are really scarce. There is also a score from the Northern Ballet available from amazon.
  4. Thanks for posting this! I had not seen this done as a ballet before... interesting take. My favorite part was the asylum scene in the very beginning. The dancers were lovely, especially Nellie and Hyde.
  5. Tiler Peck was also a competition dancer from a very young age. My experience with those dancers is that they tend to lose (or not develop) the kind of stage fright that the rest of us naturally contend with.
  6. These IG stories from rehearsal and performance from the wings are wonderful! I want them to do this for every program! (And very interesting to see Ashley Bouder in rehearsal after all the discussion about her.) Does anyone know, please: for Jewels, do many of the corps de ballet dance in more than one segment? Surely not all three?
  7. My Russian teacher gave a similar explanation! She called this one "Fairy of the Unexpected Fate." Makes more sense to me than a golden vine when you're trying to give a future queen some helpful gifts.
  8. Wow, this looks like a great season! Nice balance, seems to me.
  9. Thank you for these updates, California!
  10. Anyone seeing Dracula this weekend? Would love to hear any commentary. I was sorry to see they seem to no longer be doing digital programs on their website, now that they have resumed paper ones? Unless I'm missing something...
  11. Thank you for this detailed review, California! I have a former student in CO Ballet and am very interested in getting to know the company better and hearing about their performances.
  12. California, do you recommend? I confess, it does seem to be getting better the further I get into the stream. (Editing wise, I mean. The dancing is sublime.)
  13. Does anyone know if the Fille Mal Gardee currently streaming (Nunez and Acosta) is the same as the DVD Royal Ballet has for sale with the same leads? I ask because the DVD has been on my amazon wishlist, but now that I'm watching the stream, I find myself really annoyed at the editing! So many close ups, and badly timed ones!
  14. Another former Berthe here. The Giselle's generally try to loosen pins for you offstage before the mad scene--but sometimes one pin just sticks, or gets caught on a headpiece, etc., etc. Live theater! I agree with Emily12 and greatly prefer the Obratsova method.
  15. On the program page, under 'Discover More', you can click on the dates to see casting. She did one performance of I'm Old Fashioned for some sort of special event. And she's scheduled to dance Nine Sinatra Songs Feb 22 and 23.
  16. As I was taught, brisé brushes from 5th back, does a battu in front, and lands 5th back. (Or the reverse: brushes from the front, battu back, land front.) (Or lands 4th instead of 5th.) Assemblé can be done any direction, of course. Changé or sans changé. An assemblé battu, however, is closest to brisé but brushes from the back, battu back, and lands front. Or brushes from the front, battu front, lands back. ...I sometimes teach confused students that a brisé is sort of like entrechat-quatre: beat and land in the same 5th you started. But assemblé battu is like a royale: beat and land in the other 5th. I don't know if that will help you! Good luck!

    Fabrice Calmels

I haven't seen this posted elsewhere, but in case you missed it Fabrice has announced on Instagram that he's leaving Joffrey and heading to LA. It sounds to me from his wording that he's leaving ballet as well? Or am I reading it wrong?
  18. Lilac fairy variation for me! Those awkward pique turns into fondu tendu side up the diagonal. It just seems like almost every dancer has trouble with them and I'm always cringing in anticipation! 😁
  19. To be fair, Misty got a lot of flack, especially from her fans, for withdrawing completely from Whipped Cream. (Though the blowback might have been worse with such a nebulous excuse as "scheduling conflicts".) No dancer wants to get the reputation of being the one who's always sick or always injured. I understand why Misty's fighting for this--even while agreeing it's not fair that Sarah Lane doesn't get her own O/O. eta: Clarifying my subject.
  20. Possibly from the Ballets Russes du Colonel de Basil tour of S. America during WWII? There were a number of Greek-themed ballets he did of Fokine's if I'm remembering correctly. I know he(Fokine) had a Helen of Troy, which might work for these. Was there a Medusa?
  21. Just saw this post. Thank you! It looks like this recording has the Manu dance, the Indian dance, and the fast ending for Nikiya's Act 2 variation. I've been waiting and hoping for this version for years!
