Lourdes Lopez, Artistic Director ROMEO AND JULIET Program I Widely regarded as the finest choreographic interpretation of Shakespeare's classic play, John Cranko's masterpiece deftly recreates the timeless drama of Romeo & Juliet filled with passion and tragedy, lavish sets, romantic costumes and Prokofiev's thrilling score. Following its sold-out premiere run, Miami City Ballet revives this magnificent work for its 2014-2015 season launch. ROMEO AND JULIET Cranko/Prokofiev HEAR THE DANCE Program II Our second program of the season brings to life George Balanchine's famous words "see the music, hear the dance." Twyla Tharp's popular Nine Sinatra Songs features Great American Songbook classics by Ol' Blue Eyes, Mercuric Tidings imbues the symphonic works of Schubert with Paul Taylor's trademark athleticism, and Symphony in Three Movements, George Balanchine's exultant "miracle ballet," contains some of the most dynamic and complex patterns found in dance set to Stravinsky's driving, jazz-flavored score. NINE SINATRA SONGS Tharp/Arlen, Mercer, Cahn, Van Heusen, et al. MERCURIC TIDINGS Taylor/Schubert SYMPHONY IN THREE MOVEMENTS Balanchine/Stravinsky PASSION AND GRACE Program III Miami City Ballet proudly presents the American premiere of Richard Alston's critically-acclaimed Carmen — a flamenco-fueled, modernist take on the classic tale of passion and betrayal by one of today's most important choreographic voices. Twyla Tharp's joyous, ethereal Sweet Fields takes its cue from 18th-century Shaker hymns, and George Balanchine's dazzling Allegro Brillante is a testament to the beauty, strength and grace of the human spirit, set to a vigorous Tchaikovsky score. As Balanchine once said, "it contains everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes." CARMEN - Company Premiere Alston/Shchedrin's Carmen Suite adapted from Bizet SWEET FIELDS - Company Premiere Tharp/Billings, Walker, Wood, Ingalls ALLEGRO BRILLANTE Balanchine/Tchaikovsky POINTS OF DEPARTURE Program IV Our final program celebrates choreographers who have taken ballet in new, unexpected directions. George Balanchine's Raymonda Variations casts aside complicated plotlines and unifies the dance with Glazunov's magnificent score. The Concert (Or, The Perils of Everybody) by Jerome Robbins is one of the great comic ballets, a surprising and whimsical exploration of human relationships. And in an unprecedented world premiere, ballet and guerilla "street art" collide as choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey join forces for an entirely new exploration of movement, music and design. RAYMONDA VARIATIONS Balanchine/Glazounov THE CONCERT (Or, the Perils of Everybody) - Company Premiere Robbins/Chopin WORLD PREMIERE BY JUSTIN PECK Peck/Martinů (Shepard Fairey, set design)
