  1. Thanks Mel, DD is a huge fan so we will probably go this weekend after she gets home from RWB. I'm looking forward to it as well.
  2. I missed most of Skate Canada.....only saw the men's short and the pairs short. My husband and son went Thursday night and saw the same events but more than what they showed on TV. They also went for the practices on Saturday. I would have liked to see more of it but I guess we are at the mercy of the TV stations. At least we are seeing it almost live.(Husband and son left at end of men's short and arrived home in time to see it on TV) My son says the dance boots are cut lower for the deep knee bends though now-a-days they are not a lot lower than most of the freestyle boots. All skaters are told to point their toes(over and over again:rolleyes: ).....it helps with the jumps as well as improving the line. 3rd place is a good finish for the Canadians. There were some impressive skates from some of the young Canadian skaters. In the pairs....Putnam and Wirtz are going to be the team to watch in the next few years. I saw them at sectionals a year ago when they were a brand new team and couldn't believe the chemistry between them....very exciting to watch. It should be a good season.
  3. The comment was made to me that each dancer was perfect for the part they danced......DD laughed and said "of course they were....it was set on them". I'm glad your son enjoyed it as well.
  4. I guess "different strokes for different folks" applies here. As I said on another thread, I was expecting something very different than what was presented. Being familiar with the music I also expected something that would fit within the Mozart period. This is where we differ on our reaction to the piece. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. I don't think it was a ballet that you should make up your mind on in the first few minutes. I went in with an open mind(based on DDs heads up). I felt it was magical.....there were so many "surprises" in the choreography, the use of spacing, the use of humour, the little touches of "naughtiness"...... The choreography used the music extremely well and I felt the dancing was strong. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy it but I'm guessing the choreographer would be happy that he was able to provoke reactions and discussion at both ends of the spectrum. Did you leave at intermission?
  5. It was not at all what I expected, even with a heads up from DD who had seen both preview night and opening night last week in Winnipeg. The ballet is set to Mozart's "Magic Flute" opera(not just the incidental music)with some interesting original pieces set in. The costumes were a little off- the- wall but colourful and intriguing. The ballet is more contemporary than I expected but with classical undertones. I really enjoyed the whole experience.......the dancing was wonderful and the choreography was full of surprises. The company is very expressive throughout whether in a humourous or serious moment. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a chance to see it just make sure you read the synopsis before it begins as the story is rather complicated. Mom2...let me know what you think of it.
  6. I am going to see RWB dance "The Magic Flute" tonight in Toronto. DD saw it twice last week in Winnipeg so it will be fun to compare notes afterward. I'll let everyone know how it was later. Are any other BAers going? Tutu14
  7. It's just as well I didn't know that as I had a very active grade 3 class waiting for me the next day. Leslie
  8. Yes I saw it but I can't remember which team it was. It might have been, Tatiana NAVKA / Roman KOSTOMAROV RUS. or the UKR team. Unfortunately I didn't tape it so I can't check. Leslie p.s. Mom2....they're on the same flight...see you at the airport!
  9. Thanks Jeannie, I completely missed the mens final.....don't even know when it was on. Oh well....there's always next year. Leslie
  10. Hi Mom2, The "not physically well matched" problem in ice dance is a problem you see all the time at lower competitive levels when the skaters are still growing. If the girl is taller or very close in height it looks a little funny especially if the male has "deeper" knees than his partner. It can then make him look shorter. Many (lower level) dance teams are split up for this very reason. I guess that Tracy Wilson was assuming that a team at this level would be better matched.....it was probably decided that the personality match would overide any lack in the physical match. I hope this makes some sense. Leslie p.s. I think I must have missed the mens long.....did they show it on TSN. TSN should be ashamed of their coverage.......and I should learn to just go to bed:D
  11. The skating was on last night but really late. I went to bed around 11:30 and I think there was still an hour to go. Sometimes at competitions you see quite a range of marks or ordinals but it is usually at the lowest pre-competitive levels where you might see great presentation but cheated jumps or clean jumps but slow skating or any other combination you can think of. We saw a pre-preliminary girl (lowest non competitive level) get a 3.7 for presentation when all of the other judges gave her between 1.5 and 1.7. Everyone was shaking their heads. That particular judge was out of whack in every category that weekend......I think maybe she is at worlds this week. Looking forward to watching the mens' long tonight....hopefully at an earlier time. Leslie
  12. Thanks for the update! I did get to see the men skate their short last night on TSN. Elvis Stojko was doing colour commentary which was quite interesting since he was able to add more technical insight than we would normally hear. Did you think the judging was a little erratic or was it just me? Leslie
  13. SABgurlie24, The people on the radio:D said that they doubted that anyone would be running out to get their designers to do a knock-off of that outfit. Leslie
  14. The radio this morning was talking about it......it was Lara Flynn Boyle. Leslie
  15. Anyone see the tutu and leg ribbons ensemble? Didn't catch the person's name...... I was laughing too hard. Leslie
  16. dirac, Buttle and his coach are taking the same approach with the quad that they took with the triple axel last year. It worked for that so I guess they are hoping for the same result for the quad. He skated a great program despite the quad attempt. I think I would leave it out of the short and attempt it in the long but then I'm not his coach. Missing a quad in the long program is only a small deduction so may well be worth the risk. A name to watch for at next years senior nationals will be Ken Rose.....a local skater who I am very impressed with. He won the Junior mens this year at nationals. Gotta go..........headed to the arena. Leslie
  17. Sandhu was 1st Buttle was 2nd Andreev was 3rd landed the quad.....had a great skate. Ferreira was 4th after a disasterous skate. Jennifer Robinson won the ladies again. Shae-Lynn Bourne and Viktor Kraatz will win the dance unless...as the commentator said " they miss the bus" Leslie
  18. In Canada skating is usually on CTV, sometimes TSN. I doubt very much that you would find the Canadian Championships on any American station. As for the short program........ Ferreira had the skate of his life. Turned out of the Quad toe on the landing but otherwise skated clean. Fantastic presentation. Andreev skated well but his program doesn't do much for me. Sandhu missed the quad and the triple axel. Buttle had a terrible skate, at one point slid into the boards. His coach was interviewed and he said that they made the decision to put the quad in every program this year knowing it might cost him placings. He is apparently landing it in practice but it's a long way from being clean in competition. Hopefully he'll do better in the long. I felt he should have placed even lower in the standings. Sean Sawyer, a young skater from New Brunswick had an excellent skate and is sitting in 5th. In the pairs, Chris Wirtz hurt his shoulder in the warmup and he and his wife Kristy had to withdraw. That is a real disappointment for them as this was a comeback year after having a baby 7 months ago. Lariviere and Faustino won the competition. They are local skaters so we have seen them quite abit at competitions. The surprise(for most people) was that Sean Wirtz and Liz Putnam placed 3rd in the pairs. I saw them skate at sectionals(the qualifier for Canadians) and was very impressed so it was nice to see them do so well. They have only been together for 6 months. That's all for tonight but I'll add more after the men skate their long program tomorrow. Leslie
  19. After the short program...... 1Ben FERREIRA AB 2 Fedor ANDREEV EO 3 Emanuel SANDHU BC 4 Jeffrey BUTTLE NO This surprises me a bit. The last couple of times I saw Ferreira(another really nice guy!) and Andreev skate they were not consistent and they seemed to be having all sorts of trouble. Obviously they got over it for this event. I will be watching the short when it comes on tonight. I'll be happy to report on it when it's over. Leslie
  20. I agree with Dirac. Sandhu's style does not appeal to everyone but when he has his head in the right place he is a phenomenal skater. Unfortunately his attitude does him in more times than not. As for Buttle......I would love to see him win it. He has more personality than just about anybody else out there and he's a really nice guy. My 2 boys attended a spin seminar given by him and thought he was great. My 12 year old actually uses the ball spin in his solo that was taught to him by Jeffrey. That's probably more info than you wanted.... Leslie
  21. what I've heard so far is that Jeffrey Buttle is 1st in his flight and Sandhu is 1st in his. I'll update as I get more info. Leslie
  22. The attitudes about what is "manly" etc. obviously start at a young age. Both of my boys are figure skaters. Last week a hockey team made up of 9 year olds came into the arena during the last part of our club competition. They called my 12 year old and the sport several names of which I won't repeat. I can only believe that because of their young age that they have heard this type of thing at home(from their hockey-playing dads). My son handles it by walking away and thinking, " Little do they know.......I'm the one that gets to share a changeroom with 20 girls" L.
  23. Check out Ryerson in Toronto as well as York University(Toronto) University of Calgary and Concordia in Montreal. As to whether the programs are good or not I can't comment. L.
  24. I was flipping through some old programmes and came across this one for the Alberta Ballet in 2000. "Shakespeare, without all those damn words" L.
