For some reason, the Met Opera website is listing Brandt and Gonzalez as Tita and Pedro for Monday June 26, but the ABT website lists Teucher and Ahn.  Any thoughts on which source is correct?

I would check out Brandt as Tita, but passing on Teuscher/Ahn.

Just a guess, but it’s probably an error on the MET site as I only see Brandt listed as Gertrudis for the entire run of LWFC.  But of course she may have learned both roles, so you never know…..

  2. It would be great if Daniil were to come back to ABT!   He was still breathtaking when he danced with ABT last spring and fall.

I remember seeing Daniil listed as principal guest artist at Staatsballett Berlin for maybe the last year or so.   I guess that's what gave him the time to freelance all over the world.   Whatever he decides to do, let's hope we get more chances to see him dance.

An update on on-line ticketing for NYCB this spring: For the last several days, I have tried unsuccessfully to buy some tickets for the spring season. I was able to pick out seats, but when I went to pay, I got a message that I was being blocked for "suspicious activity." After this happened a few times, I exchanged email with CustomerCare email at NYCB. Apparently, after the cyber-attacks at the Met last month, Koch upgraded their security and they seem to have gone overboard. She reassured me that I would be cleared after a few hours. Nope! Calling the box office didn't work either -- very long wait times, then gobbledygook and I was cut off.

This morning everything worked perfectly! All the seats I had picked on Monday were still available and I have to wonder if others were having the same problem.

I hope the Met has everything fixed by March when ABT tickets go on sale for their Met season. As you know, ABT uses the Met site for ticketing.

Here's the story on the Met problems, if you missed this:

As if the performing arts don't have enough problems right now!

Thank you for posting!  I missed the articles and had no idea!

  4. Just saw NYCB e-mail about Ratmansky.  Wonderful News!

    Ratmansky Named Artist in Residence

    pictures-woodward-190427b-001-eb.jpg

Ratmansky's Pictures at an Exhibition premiered in 2014 and will be on stage this spring.

From everyone at New York City Ballet, we hope you are enjoying a happy and safe new year.

New York City Ballet is excited to announce the appointment of Alexei Ratmansky as the Company's Artist in Residence, beginning August, 2023. Widely regarded as one of the world's greatest living choreographers, Ratmansky joins the Company's artistic leadership alongside Jonathan Stafford, Wendy Whelan, and Justin Peck.

Ratmansky has created six acclaimed works for NYCB: Russian Seasons (2006), Concerto DSCH (2008), Namouna, A Grand Divertissement (2010), Pictures at an Exhibition (2014), Odessa (2017), and Voices (2020). Ratmansky's newest work for NYCB will premiere during the 2024 Winter Season as part of NYCB's 75th Anniversary Season.

Please join us in celebrating this historic appointment and we invite you to read more about the announcement in The New York Times here.

I think they shouldn't be in a hurry to fill the spot until/unless they find the right person.  They didn't always have a resident choreographer, and there was a reason at the time to hire Ratmansky.

I also think they should be looking for additions to their coaching staff, independent from the RC role.  May she live a much, much longer life, but Irina Kolpatkova will be 90 next May.

I agree with both of your points.

My pleasure. About the chance of catching a future performance, I'd suggest you to look for announcements one or two days before December 18th. So far, that's the only performance of Nutcracker scheduled for a Sunday, so I bet that's the one that will be streamed. Guest dancers will be Maria Yakovleva and Davide Dato, from Wiener Staatsballett.

Thank you!  I'll be sure to start checking around December 16.

Nina, not sure whether your question is about the live performances or the live broadcasts, since the latter is the topic in this thread.

Live performances: about eight to ten performances of each program. During the current season we've had Giselle (IIRC, the live broadcast with Osipova and Camargo was mentioned here in BA); a mixed bill that included Sinfonietta; Cranko's Onegin; the current R&J and the last title of the season will be Nureyev's The Nutcracker next month (remember that, being in the southern hemisphere, we have inverted seasons, so our ballet and opera seasons are usually from mid or late March to mid or late December).

During the current season the live broadcasts have become regular for opera and ballet. They broadcast just one performance of each title, usually a Sunday afternoon performance (5 pm local time). Unfortunately, the announcements are released on very short notice. IMHO, for anyone that might be interested, the most reliable source to keep track of the broadcasts is their instagram.

Yes, I did mean broadcasts, but I welcome all of the information you provided.  I did see some snippets of the Giselle with Osipova/ Camargo and the mixed bill with Sinfonietta when I was searching for R&J, but quickly realized that they were not the complete programs.

The opera house looks absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks again for all  of the information.  Hopefully I'll catch a performance soon.

  8. I am absolutely kicking myself.  I completely forgot about the time, and missed all but the end of the ballet.  Next time I'll have to tape a reminder to my head!   Yes, Cornejo is not dancing like a forty something.  He was really amazing as Puck last week.

At first it looked like I could replay the ballet as I was able to start from beginning, but it has now frozen me out.     Maybe they just need time to post it?  I'll keep trying......

    Glad you both enjoyed it.

Cornejo posted this on an IG story. He and Boylston are performing in R&J at the Teatro Colon and they're live streaming the performance on the theater's YouTube channel, tomorrow Sunday, Nov 6 at 5pm Argentina time (that's 3pm EST, after tonight's daylight savings).

I think the live stream is free, but cannot confirm.

    Wow, thank you!

DANIIL SIMKIN TO PERFORM IN WHIPPED CREAM WITH AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE, OCTOBER 21 AND 22, 2022 AT THE DAVID H. KOCH THEATER

Thank you so much for posting!   Loved him in the role when they did this ballet at the MET.   I already had tickets for one these dates and greedily just bought the other performance date as well.

Masks no longer required at the Koch.

I received an e-mail from the Koch today which says masks are no longer required effective November 1.   See copy and paste below:

With the recent changes in CDC guidelines and the availability of vaccines, boosters, and antiviral treatments, as of November 1, mask usage by visitors, when attending performances or events at the David H. Koch Theater or while participating in workshops in the Samuel B. & David Rose Building, is encouraged but no longer required.

Koch website has also been updated - see URL below.

    NYCB Safety Update

I take this to mean that masks will be required for ABT's fall performances, and begins with Paul Taylor performances in November.

I’m wondering if it’s just the order of wording in Shayer’s bio that leads to confusion. Maybe he isn’t saying Guest Principal Artist @ ABT. Perhaps he’s listing them as separate things, like he is a dancer at ABT and a guest principal artist in outside productions? He hasn’t been dropped from the ABT website, which leads me to believe he is still with the company. Either way its unnecessarily confusing.

I never thought of that.  They could be separate things.  And yes, very confusing.

  13. Thanks to everyone for the postings on Sterling and Robbie's VW.   The reviews are wonderful and it sounds like a very memorable performance.  I wish I had been able to make it.  At least I got to see Sterling in some other rep this season.  She was clearly appreciated by the audience.   We are all going to miss her.

By using the word "principal" in the phrase "principal guest artist" on his IG it makes it seem like he is a principal at ABT, which he is not.  The more accurate description would be  something like guest soloist or guest artist.

If true, I am very sorry to hear that Shayer is leaving ABT and becoming a guest artist.  He is still listed as a soloist dancer on ABT’s website so I guess we’ll have to wait until ABT updates their website or Shayer makes some kind of clear announcement.

I don’t agree that calling himself principal guest artist makes it sound as though he is a principal dancer at ABT.  He is saying principal guest artist, not principal dancer.

As far as I know, guest artists are either called guest artists or principal guest artists.  I’ve never heard of a guest soloist.  The label should be independent of a title previously held at the company.

This is why it needs a ballerina who can bring something extra. If Scotch Symphony is going to hold attention, it needs a ballerina who tantalizes and fascinates. Otherwise it can get dull fast.

Agreed.    Looking forward to Hyltin who seems more of a natural for the role.  I haven't seen Scotch more than a handful of times but I have always enjoyed it.  As noted the ballerina can make or break it which goes for most ballets.

It actually depends on the date; they're doing Tchai Pas on Sept 24m and 29e.

How right you are!  I do not see it listed under the ballets for that program on the main fall page, but I see a blurb at the top of the linked page indicating that duo is replaced by TPDD for those two dates.  Talk about confusion!  Anyway, thanks!

  17. Like everyone else, I've been hunting for the PDFs NYCB used to post and keep up to date with changes.  Unfortunately these particular fall, winter and spring PDFs are from the subscription packages mailed out months ago and they are not being updated.  I wouldn’t have realized it, except that the fall pdf has the same error (TPDD vs Duo) for the fall’s Masters at Work: Balanchine and Robbins.  Duo is correct btw.  No idea if anything else is different or has changed as I haven’t checked the pdfs against the website itself.  This one just stood out to me.

I noticed an even bigger issue when I was buying additional tickets a few days ago.  When I used the drop down menu to check for seats for other dates of the same program, it brought up the dates for other seasons with the same program name but which have completely different ballets.  It does not tell you the ballets are different.  Fortunately I had my subscription material in front of me when buying additional performances and knew they didn’t match.   Classic NYCB I and II were a couple I noticed.

NYCB re-uses program names all the time, but they should not do so in the same 12 month period if it is going to pull up different ballets that just happen to have the same heading/program name.
