Many thanks for the link.
The recording of the interview on Ustream lasted about one hour and forty minutes.
The interviewer was Japanese but there was a translator and David Hallberg spoke in English throughout. He discussed his life as dancer from his time in France up until today. He talked about several of his video clips -great use of video/equipment - and also demonstrated some dance steps with some of the participants.
I really enjoyed the interview. It was very interesting and also very amusing.
I just stumbled onto this post. I would like to ask if anyone has recorded that interview or if it's still avalaible somewhere in the Net. Thank you!

Yes, indeed! There's this interview and the one done in Japan with David Hallberg that puts American tv to shame.
Indeed! BTW, does anyone happen to have a recording of Hallberg's Japan interview, or has uploaded it? I'd so love to see it again!

I read somewhere that David Hallberg performed 16 entrechat DIX on the finale of Giselle. Is this true? I can't believe it.

One of the great things about the May 21st matinee is how in sync Semionova and Hallberg are. Their air of playfulness, their clean, precise mime, their elevation, their long lovely lines – they all meshed. The chemistry between Seminonova and Hallberg is palpable. But then David Hallberg seems to have chemistry with practically every ballerina he partners.
Thank you for your report... how I wish I was there (unfortunately I live in Italy ). It would be great if there'll be some videos of the show in the Net, but I think this is unlikely to happen...

I have just stumbled upon an interview of Mr. Hallberg (p30 - p38) from the Arabesque magazine (The periodical Magazine of the Ballet of Tbilisi Opera & Ballet Theatre)
Thank you, this was lovely!

We too rarely see any clips of ABT's dancers. I swear the company acts as if streaming video doesn't even exist.
You're so right!
-
Are there some italian people here? I'm from Rome and I frequently attend Rome's Opera Ballet performances.
-
Mr. Hallberg is turning into ABT's international star it appears. According to his twitter, he was in Italy earlier this month performing at the Balletto dell'Opera di Roma in Sylvia with Polina Semionova. At the moment there are some nice clips on youtube of their performances.
He's supposed to perform again in Italy (I'm from Rome, so I know). He is scheduled to perform in a Béjart/Balanchine/Robbins mixed bill in may (I suppose he will perform Tchaikovsky pas de deux, or maybe In the Night by Robbins; final casting hasn't been announced yet, as usual here in Italy ) and in La Bayadère with Polina Semionova in october, at Rome Opera House. And italian audience loves him!

Very interesting timing on this post, I've been lately watching all the clips of Hallberg I can find on youtube. His performance of The Dance of the Blessed Spirits in Ukraine just left me speechless.
I couln't agree more with you, little-junkie. It's a real pity there are so few clips of him on YouTube!

Lucky you!
He is a lovely young man and a serious artist who is always a pleasure to watch.
Do you know him in person? Watching him onstage and having met him briefly after the performance, I make no effort in thinking he's a great and lovely person, too.
Polina Semionova is of course a great ballerina - more of the "modern" type, I think, so, while I appreciate her a lot in contemporary works, I don't think classical, 'Petipa' roles suit her so well. Personally, in ballets like Swan Lake I prefer other ballerinas. I think you will have a good time watching her, though, especially if it's your first time, as she has a strong, clean technique, great extensions, and beautiful lines. Please report about the performance when the moment will come!

I wonder if there would be any chance that he would perform with Lopatkina. They'd make a wonderful couple.
-
Saw Hallberg in the audience last night (was told he rehearses SL for Mariinsky's festival).
So, he will perform in St. Petersburg? When will the festival be held?
-
Count me in that club too!
Where are you from (if I may ask you), and did you get the chance to see ABT (and expecially Hallberg) a lot? I'm from Italy and I saw him performing Sylvia with Polina Semionova at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma last october... love at first sight (though I had already seen him in videos and appreciated him greatly). He will come back in may for a Béjart/Balanchine/Robbins mixed bill (he will be performing Tchai pas de deux, I guess). Just can't wait!

Thanks for the sleuthing, golden_slave!
Don't mention it, actually I collected them all as I'm a big fan of ABT (expecially of David Hallberg)
-
Wondering if our UK posters saw any of the recent ABT performances or can report on how the company was received by the critics. Thanks in advance!
I'm not from UK neither I have seen any of the performances, but I can at least link you some of the reviews

Ok, thank you for information!

I have watched a lot of Italian ballets.
Excuse me, just curious... which ballets did you watch?

& one more question, for Giannina (since she's a moderator, I see): why am I not able to see any members' profiles (not even my own)? When I try clicking on it a message appears which says that I need to be a full member to do that.

Dear Giannina and puppytreats,
thank you for your welcome.
@Puppytreats:
Recently, Silvie Guillem was quoted, during a press conference given in anticipation of a performance of Manon at La Scala, criticizing the administration of La Scala and indicating it did not support artists.
This is so sad but true. Fundamentally, this is a political issue. Our government (led by in-famous Silvio Berlusconi ) doesn't support very much cultural institutions. Through the last years they reduced more and more the amount of public money given to public schools, universities, research centers, museums, libraries, opera houses and so on. As you may have heard or read, this is a BIG issue nowadays in Italy (especially as all this damages the public education system).
Some minor ballet/theatre companies have been forced to close (like the one of Genova's Teatro Carlo Felice). Theaters don't have the economic resources to support workers. Dancers are often underpaid, or they work under a short-term contract (MANY of the young dancers usually playing leading roles at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma or at La Scala are currently working under this type of contracts) There are few opportunities for younger people (the ONLY two étoiles at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Mario Marozzi and Laura Comi, are almost fifty years old!).
Perhaps my perception is off based on the few articles I have read, and the poor translations I have obtained of these articles!
Once more, I fear it's so. Ballerini are not popular at all in Italy (except among ballet fans, of course). The only ballet dancer that is a media celebrity is Roberto Bolle, but I think this is largely due to his good looks ;) And then, of course, there is Carla Fracci, a national icon. But that's all.
Most people find ballet 'boring and old-fashioned', especially the young ones. On the other hand, there's plenty of young girls and teens who take ballet (or jazz dance) classes, but this happens mainly because they want to be like the girls they see in 'reality shows' (which are very popular here). They (and often their teachers too) have no ballet culture. They often don't even know the names of the most famous dancers, or are never been to a show at a theatre! You can often hear someone say 'Roberto Bolle is the best ballerino in the world', but in 90% of cases it's because he's the ONLY ballerino they actually know
Just to let you know, however, Bolle isn't appreciated so much by Italian ballet fans (TRUE fans, I mean). Many people think that, while being a technical monster, he is not that good at interpretation, that he's a bit stiff, 'absent' and 'cold' on stage (& I think so, too). Ferri is - or better, was - instead very appreciated, mostly for her acting and interpretation skills (some find she has some technic faults, but this doesn't bother me at all).
I hope my reply satisfied you in some way I would have liked to write so much more, but as I said before my English is not fluent at all
Goodbye!

Hi all of you! I just discovered this AMAZING site thanks to an Internet friend of mine who is an active member on this forum, too. I'm 28, female, and I'm from Italy, I'm a long time balletomane and a beginner amateur ballet student. Since my english is very poor (unfortunately!) I don't know if I will be able to partecipate in discussions very much, but be sure that I follow and enjoy immensely all of your threads, especially the ones concerning US and UK companies.
Congratulations to the admins of this fabulous community!
Bye,
golden_slave (despite of the nickname I'm a female, yes )
