  1. Oh, dufay, I was thinking the same thing as I watched the Ice Dance final. I was also thinking of Usuva/ZHulin's skate to Vivaldi's 4 seasons. Ice dancing has come down so far since the T & D days. What are the people who structure that sport thinking?????
  2. This author captured my thoughts EXACTLY. I'm a recent ballet fan (since my daughter's been involved these last 6 years) but have watched and enjoyed skating since Janet Lyn captured our hearts oh so many years ago (am I dating myself?). This season seems to have gotten off to a dismal start. Has anyone stayed upright for a long program yet? I love Michelle - think she's a great role model for young women - but she seems to have lost her way a bit. Sasha Cohen is a beautiful artist and will excel if she can stay on her feet. The rest of the women's field looks young or just not up to the calibre we've come to appreciate. The men's field looks more than a bit dismal, with Yagudin and Goebel both out. I've been discouraged with the Men's field, since my favorite, Paul Wylie, retired.) And pairs - yikes - The US has nothing to offer right now. Hopefully this lull will end soon. I hope that someone will evaluate seriously the schedule these young men and women are under so that good skaters can stay healthy and skating. Have there ever been this many sidelying injuries all at once?
  3. I pumped my daughter for more details and also talked to one of the moms who went (and who is a dancer). They both enjoyed the evening. It's a ballet I know my daughter has never seen, and it was a rare opportunity to see PNB. The Bowl is NOT a good venue for dance, so I think the dancers made do with what they had. There must not be enough space downstairs for dancer prep as my daughter mentioned that they warmed up on stage during intermission. She thought it damaged the "illusion" of dance as magical. I probably would have enjoyed it if I had been there (I love watching our girls have "on stage" warmup before a show - it's almost meditative). Neither was crazy about the balanchine coreography, but we're not a balanchine studio in the least. I think that Lewis Segal's review in the LA Times mentioned that as well - he preferring Ashton's choreography. (And for Segal, the review was actually quite good - he can be biting at times, to say the least). Yes, it was a bit choppy, but if I understood the program correctly, it was not the whole night, just the second 1/2 of the evening, so they probably had to pick and choose what they included. As to the dancers: Both thought Patricia Barker wonderful, and the other dancers strong as well. We're fans of Ariana Lallone as well, as she is from LA, and she had great jumps with those long legs of hers. I think that's all I can tell you - hope it helps.
  4. we had several girls and a few moms/dads, along with our directors, go see the saturday night show. All I got from my daughter was that it was good, Patricia Barker was amazing and that she was cold (typical for the Bowl at night). I'll try to get more details and get back to you.
