  1. It's Sunday, October 20. That was announced in a newsletter recently. I'm guessing that's the middle of the two-week run. NYCB closes on Sunday October 13, so ABT is probably right after that October 15-??
  2. Darn! He is in almost every performance of In the Upper Room next week -- a highlight, for me.
  3. Ticket sales have been suspended for Polunin's engagement at the London Palladium, but it doesn't look like the performances have actually been cancelled: https://www.londontheatredirect.com/news/london-theatre-direct-halt-ticket-sales-for-sergei-polunin-at-the-london-palladium-in-light-of-homophobic-comments-posted-on-instagram
  4. I have the same frustration with Royal Danish Ballet. I have waited years for them to do another Bournonville festival - a great excuse for visiting Copenhagen! It's almost as if they are avoiding their priceless heritage!
  5. Good point -- the Ratmansky trio is only getting four performances and the Tharp trio is getting five performances. Whipped Cream is getting seven.
  6. Sorry - I was thinking of this week for Harlequinade. It will be interesting to see how Whipped Cream does, though.
  7. I saw that, too, but wondered if that was just last chance to see it this season. Still, given the miserable attendance, I can't imagine they'd risk it again anytime soon.
  8. Grants were announced today by the National Endowment for the Arts. Use the search tool for "ballet" or "dance" - lots of small grants around the country. Listing by program/discipline: click down to "dance": https://www.arts.gov/sites/default/files/Spring2019_DisciplineList_FINAL.pdf Listing by state: https://www.arts.gov/sites/default/files/Spring2019_StateList.pdf
  9. I am surprised to read all the reports of an empty theater. I assumed that with TDF, TKTS, and freebies to students, they could do better. But like many here, I didn't see a lot in this season that screamed: you must jump onto an airplane to see THIS. I'll see Manon (great casts, Bolle retirement), a couple of Corsaires, the Tharp trio (can't get enough of In the Upper Room), and the opening of Jane Eyre (mainly out of curiosity). That's it. I have seen Whipped Cream and Harlequinade and have no interest in seeing them again.
  10. A video of his complete commencement address at the USC Glorya Kauffman School of Dance: https://news.usc.edu/157051/mikhail-baryshnikov-be-disciplined-about-being-generous-to-others-and-to-yourselves/
  11. Wow --- thanks for posting. A balance by Tereshkina that abatt on this site has described as "gob-smacking" is at 1:47:17 - she does it twice. Worth a look.
  12. No idea. I've been trying to figure out when singles go on sale at Segerstrom and the LA Music Center. I'm guessing casting will be announced right before then, but that's a guess.
  13. Lots of information on the IMDb site: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5460858/
  14. And if you are a fan of Nunez, she'll be doing Giselle with Hallberg the previous weekend at the LA Music Center: https://www.musiccenter.org/tickets/events-by-the-music-center/Glorya-Kaufman-Dance/Subscriptions/subscribe/teatro-alla-scala/ No ABT at the Music Center in 2019-20 -- just Mariinsky and La Scala https://www.musiccenter.org/tickets/events-by-the-music-center/Glorya-Kaufman-Dance/
  15. Here's the NY Time review of Copeland's Swan Lake with Brooklyn Mack in 2015: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/14/arts/dance/review-misty-copeland-in-the-washington-ballets-swan-lake.html I wish people would be more generous in acknowledging the contributions of their predecessors. There's no shame in that, just class and honesty. I, too, thought the Ashton-Balanchine program looked very interesting.
  16. So pleased to see this. I was one of many writers for Washington DanceView in the late 70s/early 80s -- virtually unlimited space, which was unheard of elsewhere. And a lot of free tickets to great stuff during the dance boom! Richly deserved award - congratulations!
  17. Gomes and ABT

A little information on Gomes' scheduled performances: Swan Lake-May 24, 27, 29, 2019 and The Dream June 22 and 26, 2019. No word on casting for the new season 2019-20: https://www.semperoper.de/ensemble/personen/peid/marcelo-gomes/5939.html

    Gomes and ABT

Marcelo Gomes will be a guest principal artist at the Semperoper Ballet Dresden next year: https://www.semperoper.de/en/ensemble.html#29885-4 This was hinted in a comment on Stella Abrera's Instagram, and I'm glad to see it's been announced.
  20. We have discussed seating at the Met repeatedly. Some of it is personal preference. I like the Grand Tier, as you have an unobstructed view and the rows are steeply laddered, so you don't have a head-in-front problem. But you're so far away - yuk. I hate the orchestra -- the only thing I consider is side orchestra on the aisle, which gives you an unobstructed view without heads, even pretty far back. But they're hard to come by. Everything else in orchestra is at high-risk of heads blocking views, especially if you're on the short side. I actually like the parterre boxes near the stage when I'm seeing a lot of performances in other seating of the same ballet/cast. You have an obstructed view of the back corner, so you have to be careful about which side (the balcony for R&J, the grave for Giselle, etc.). The second row is unacceptable in all circumstances. It's fun to see them up close and even a little into the wings, but you have to know what you're losing and putting up with when you pick those tickets.
  21. In an email today, they said they would announce the new season on May 14.
  22. It looks like Bolle will be in Tokyo in 2019, but I can't find a 2020 commitment, at least on his web site. So perhaps this is really possible? If so - wow - worth a trip to see this engagement! http://www.robertobolle.com/news/tokyo-2019-ferri-bolle-and-friends/ David Hallberg and other notables have done guest performances at La Scala, if Bolle really isn't available.
  23. Lucky for us that Gomes' Purple Rothbart is on the ABT DVD of Swan Lake from 2005 -- one of the few recorded performances of his work available to the public: https://www.amazon.com/Tchaikovsky-American-Ballet-Theatre-Corella/dp/B000AYEI9A/
  24. Fellows have just been announced for the NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts for 2019-20. Impressive group: http://www.nyu.edu/about/news-publications/news/2019/april/the-center-for-ballet-and-the-arts-at-nyu-announces-2019-2020-fe.html
  25. Finally just made it onto their web site. I think subscriptions go on sale today. https://www.scfta.org/Subscriptions/Packages.aspx?seasonID=671
