Yeah, I'm not sure we have enough info yet to assert that Pereira will be debuting as Swanilda. It's possible, but Bouder doesn't say that. The story is just Pereira doing some steps, messing around in a rehearsal room, with a caption that says, "Ladies and Gentlemen...the newest Coppelia."
"Coppelia" is the doll's name. That's a different (and much smaller) role.

Since that's a .pdf, I also wonder if it's updated as frequently as the website. (Possibly.)
The pdf hasn't been updated yet with the cast changes that were announced during the last 12 hours or so.

The web design is poor because you have to put your cursor over every performance to see the cast. The old web design was superior because it allowed you to see all the casting for each performance easily at a glance.
Just below the calendar is a link that reads: Download the Spring Season performance calendar with full casting.
If you click on that, you'll see the casting for all of the performances.

It might work for ABT have a fall season in Orange County with all their works. Then spend Jan - June in NYC.
ABT has to fit its NYC schedule into the available time at the Metropolitan Opera House and the formerly-known-as State Theatre. The Met is occupied from late September through mid-May by the Metropolitan Opera Company. There are a couple of open weeks in the fall at the State, so ABT has a fall season there.

It's unfortunate that there's next to no footage or sound recordings of the Adele and Fred Broadway act.
Actually, there are sound recordings of Fred and Adele singing Gershwin songs from the Broadway shows. Look for the Astaire CD titled "Puttin' On the Ritz".

Like many others, I suspect, I just got a membership renewal form in the mail. I remember complaints a couple of years ago that they had raised their Friends prices without noticeably increasing benefits. So it's interesting that they've dropped prices this time around, mainly in the four lowest categories.
For Dancers Circle: from $100 to $90; from $240 to $180; from $480 to $360; from $750 to $600. Those are pretty substantial cuts. Perhaps they hope to win some people back.
The thresholds for the donor levels have not been lowered; they are currently the same as last year's. They are going to be increased in 2018 to the substantially higher levels--they are trying to entice you to renew now rather than wait until next year.

The ABT site shows Boylston/Shayer dancing the Ratmansky premiere (Songs of Bukovina) on October 20th and 21st. Lendorf is still (as of this minute) scheduled for Other Dances on the 27th and Plato on the 29th.
Cory Stearns is now scheduled to perform Other Dances with Isabela Boylston on the 27th. Lendorf has also been replaced in Plato on the 29th, though I'm uncertain which dancer is taking his place.

Gorak has replaced Lendorf in his performances of Symphonic Variations. Hammoudi replaces Lendorf in tomorrow evening's Symposium. And on the Koch's website, it shows Shevchenko/Royal dancing all performances of the Ratmansky premiere, replacing Lendorf/Boylston. Also, the Koch website shows Hammoudi replacing Lendorf in ALL performances of Symposium.

Artistic Director Douglas Martin has choreographed and created the libretto for Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, which was premiered on April 21st and 22nd in Princeton, NJ, by his company, American Repertory Ballet. Links to three reviews of this ballet are below:

The man touching Novikova on the shoulder was the company director Vaziev. Once I was okay with--friendly gesture I guess--twice I thought he should just keep himself out if the frame if he is not being interviewed. My own experience with male colleagues who feel licensed to touch me in a 'friendly' manner may have influenced my negative reaction.
When it happened during the intermission, I recall that Novikova interrupted her monologue to say "spasibo" (thank you) to Vaziev, which suggests that the shoulder touch was a signal that she was expecting.

I seek your advice. As part of my membership in ABT I signed up for the dress rehearsal for Giselle. I've never been to a dress rehearsal before. What is it like? How does it work? Do you see multiple casts? Does the director frequently stop the flow? Would I get enough of the performance so that I don't need to buy a ticket for another performance of Giselle? I have seen ABT's Giselle many, many times over the years and love it. Thank you for your input.
There are a lot of variables. Sometimes all of the lead dancers will rehearse as if performing, and sometimes one or more will just mark their dances (especially if coming back from an injury or if they are in the performance that night). Sometimes there are people on stage in warmup clothing instead of costumes (presumably because their costumes are being repaired or altered). Sometimes a stagehand will wander onto the stage to move a prop. Sometimes (actually, often) you will hear instructions from a rehearsal director being given to the performers onstage, while they continue to perform (and you may see a brief acknowledgement of the correction from the dancers). Usually (as stated above), the different acts are performed by different casts, and sometimes after an act has been completed a pas de deux will be danced by a pair who are not otherwise in the rehearsal.
If you are not too picky about seat selection, your best option may be to watch the rehearsal and then decide if you want to see more of one of the casts that has just rehearsed or if you'd rather see the whole thing performed by a different cast. You can go right to the box office after the rehearsal has ended.

Natalia is absolutely correct. The company that performed in the Mariinsky Theatre that was named for the Czar's wife Maria, was known as the Imperial Russian Ballet, (or) the Imperial Ballet. This was the case until 1918 a year after the Revolution. After that, it was named the State Academic Ballet of Petrograd by the communists during the Russian Civil War years in the 1920s. Following the death of Lenin when the city was renamed Leningrad, Sergei Kirov was the Party leader of the city. After Sergei Kirov's hit was ordered by Stalin, (which began the purges of the 1930s), the Theatre was re-named, the Sergei Mironovich Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, and the opera and ballet companies that performed in it were known by the name "Kirov." This name lasted until the early 2000s when the ballet company itself reverted back to it's original name. The Theatre reclaimed it's original name "Mariinsky" in the 1990s, when the city reclaimed it's original name, St. Petersburg. If Macaulay's verbs were past tense,
perhaps he should have waited to publish his review before posting the rough draft off his airline napkin.
Natalia is correct regarding the proper name for the company in 1895 and throughout the 20th Century; Macaulay, however, uses "Mariinsky" as the name for the company that performed Swan Lake in 1895 in St. Petersburg. There is no evidence that the writer is referring to the post-Soviet company when the review mentions the "first Mariinsky version" and the "vast resources" of the Mariinsky. The error is Macaulay's use of the name, not aurora's interpretation of his intent.

It was eerily similar to the fall that Osipova took in Giselle at the Met last May - which gave Stella her NY debut in Giselle.
i just wanted to offer a correction to this comment--Stella Abrera's Giselle performance at the Met was on May 23rd; Natalia Osipova's performance was on May 28th. Abrera was replacing a different injured dancer (Polina Semionova?), not Osipova.
-
I do believe that guest artists are hired in somewhat later in the game. Last year all the Russians that went into "La Bayadere" were announced only a few months before the season started. Also, guest artists have been brought in to replace injured principals. The casting for the Met 2015 season changed a lot late in the game and throughout the season due to guest artist additions/subtractions and the injuries effecting Hallberg, Semionova and Osipova.
The October 16, 2014, announcement of the 2015 spring season for ABT included the following: Guest Artists for the season include Semyon Chudin, principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, Maria Kochetkova, principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet, Denys Nedak, soloist with the National Ballet of Ukraine, Marianela Nuñez, principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, Evgenia Obraztsova, principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, Natalia Osipova, principal dancer with The Royal Ballet and Olga Smirnova, leading soloist with the Bolshoi Ballet.
So having Ms. Ferri as the only guest artist on the schedule at this point is a big change from last year, even if the situation is subject to change.
-
Looks like they are charging more for the subscription which contains the Ferri Cornejo R&J than for other weeknight subscriptions containing the same number of performances.
This is a new pricing dynamic. They have charged more in the past for the farewell performances, but they have never automatically charged a higher price at the outset for a guest artist appearance before any dynamic pricing went into effect. This is a disturbing trend.
The partnership of the inimitable Ferri and The Great Cornejo is in a class by itself, and isn't what I would call "guest artists." This evening will sell out the house, even at the higher price. I will help it along.
You may not think of Ferri as a guest artist, but ABT does. She is classified as a guest artist in the ABT press release that announced her Juliet performance. How about alumna guest artist.
Ms. Ferri's special status with ABT suggests that the pricing for this event may not be a trend that will be followed for all guest artists. (...And so far, they have not scheduled other guest artists.)

Why would she? She was supposed to have retired with a "Sleeping Beauty". The schedule was set. The fact that SHE decided not to perform in "Beauty" and dance something else probably meant that ABT had to do some very quick juggling. I find it remarkable that ABT was able to give her a slot and in a ballet she preferred. OK, so it was a matinee, but I think they did the best they could, given the circumstances. I can't speak to any thing else regarding her retirement, but her final bow was lovely and well earned. If she was unhappy about the circumstances it certainly didn't show.
It's really not that remarkable. Paloma was scheduled to appear in the matinee performance of Giselle all along--you can check out the advance schedule in post #2 (dated October 16, 2014, from Dale) of the ABT 2015 Met Season thread. Her performance in The Sleeping Beauty was canceled and her scheduled performance in Giselle became her farewell. Usually, long-time principal dancers are given their own choice for their farewell performance, but it appears that TSB was assigned to Paloma, until she put her foot down.

I attended the dress rehearsal on Tuesday. I've seen a couple of DRs each of the past 12 or 13 years, and I cannot remember a previous one that had so many corrections called out by the rehearsal director (not Kevin McKenzie) sitting in the orchestra seats. Most of these were directed at the corps (and also the supers); a couple of times she made them repeat a sequence. In the last act, with about twenty minutes remaining in the rehearsal, she asked the conductor to stop and repeat a piece of music so that another performer (in the Gamzatti role, I believe) could do the dance. The conductor began to argue with the director; she told him to just follow the instructions. After exclaiming that they would run out of time, he gave in (and the third act was completed before 5:00). All in all, I perceived more tension among the performers than usual, and some of the wobbles that have been commented on from the early performances were also noticeable in the rehearsal. The spring schedule this year is like it always is, with one big story ballet after another, but this week in particular (so far) the company seems a bit under-rehearsed.
