David Michael (Wendy Whelan's husband) did an installation a while back (maybe 10 years ago?) called "Slow Dancing," which showed dancers from a variety of dance genres in extremely slow motion--I would guess that this could be his work.
You are correct; this is the work of Wendy Whelan's husband, but his name is David Michalek.

Doesn't look like we'll be seeing much of Cassandra Trenary. I always found her to be one of the more interesting dancers in the company.
Cassandra Trenary has been added to the cast of On the Dnipro on October 29th in the role of Natalia; no assignment had been shown for this role previously. On that same date, Cory Stearns has been removed from the cast of Single Eye. Calvin Royal III is now shown in that position (he had previously been the fifth dancer listed), and Thomas Forster is now included in the cast.

We're trying to locate the Strauss Cinderella Ballet music, and have searched high and low. Does anyone know where we can buy it? Thank you!
Aschenbroedel was made available on CD in 1991 from an analog recording by the National Philharmonic Orchestra in 1980, conducted by Richard Bonynge. This 2-CD set also includes ballet music from Ritter Pasman, and Le Beau Danube, a ballet suite that draws from music by Johann I, Johann II, and Josef Strauss.
It is identified as Decca 430 852-2

Anyone else notice that they misspelled Dnieper repeatedly in the announcement?
It's not a misspelling. "Dnipro" is the transliteration of the Ukrainian name for the river, whereas "Dnieper" is transliterated from Russian.

Just wondering when the Fsll Season Will be announced. In the past, it is usually near the end of the Spring season.
Last year it was announced on July 18th, the Monday after the completion of the summer season. The ballet season is ending a week later this year.

Does anyone know what ever became of Brubach's work on a biography of Tanaquil LeClercq? As far as I can tell, no such biography was ever published.
I do not know, but possibly she abandoned the full-length book when the biography by Orel Protopopescu was published:
Dancing Past the Light, the Life of Tanaquil LeClercq. University Press of Florida. 2021.
The acknowledgments in that book include: "I am grateful to...Holly Brubach for permission to quote from her article, 'Remembering Tanaquil LeClercq.'" Protopopescu also included quotes from other Brubach articles.

I think that when ABT performs "pure dance" ballets, the company often gets compared unfavorably to NYCB. With story ballets that include big sets, there is not such a direct comparison. When NY-area ballet lovers want to see a story ballet, they generally think of ABT first.
I do wish that they didn't always have to include Swan Lake, and just a few other warhorses with one new production every year during their four-week season, but I understand why they do it.

Fosse's Chicago is still playing on Broadway and is worth seeing. I saw that with TKTS and Leanne d'Amboise as Roxie. (Yes - THAT d'Amboise) https://chicagothemusical.com/cast/
That's Charlotte d'Amboise (daughter of Jacques).

I don't think it has been mentioned yet on this thread that Christopher Wheeldon's "Like Water for Chocolate", which is premiering now at the Royal Ballet, is a co-production with American Ballet Theatre. We can expect it to be performed in New York in the next year or two.

I'm thinking they would pick Woodward before Gerrity, just because Woodward is a principal. I think that's why they used Lovette, who was clearly outside of her technique wheelhouse. Woodward could definitely handle the technical demands of the role, I believe.

I’m a bit surprised they wouldn’t film even an entire movement. Have many of the earlier streamed-during-quarantine performances been compiled for the same reason? I don’t recall that.
I believe that last week's showing of Prodigal Son also used footage from two performances.

Has anyone else been able to stream a replay of BalletCollective’s Nutcracker at Wethersfield since yesterday’s livestream? I had some issues with Twitch and would like to see it again. But the link just brings me back to a 20-second promo. It is supposed to be available through Saturday.
On the "Stream" page it states: Available again on demand December 23, 2020 at 5PM to December 26, 2020, at 11:59PM

There has not been an announcement, but her absence is discussed in the ABT 2020 Promotions thread.

By the way, Sarah Lane's dancer page is still archived on ABT.org. If you look at the top under her name it says "Joined ABT 2003/Principal 2017-2020" So she is no longer a principal and no longer a member of the company.
Sarah Lane is teaching a master class at Princeton Ballet School on October 16th. (It is posted on their home page.) She is identified as "American Ballet Theatre's Sarah Lane" and the brief description of her career states that she "has been a ballerina with American Ballet Theatre for 18 years." Most likely, this was all arranged before recent events changed her status with ABT.

I watched this with my spouse and we both enjoyed it. It's best to approach this as a movie with a lot of ballet, rather than a ballet performance film. The scenery is very good--they give the film the appearance of having been shot on location in an old city, but it was actually shot in Budapest on sets built for this film. The "ground" was actually built on sprung floors (same for the indoor scenes), which allowed the dancers to move much better than they would have on stone. Some of the dance scenes suffered a bit because of the filming; for example, some of the scenes were shown with some obstruction, as if you were watching from another room. (Watching through curtains was particularly annoying.) Some of the choreography was modified for this film, suggesting that Deborah MacMillan must have given approval.

I believe that the practice of having a Nutcracker season in November/December took hold in the U.S. when companies realized that people who did not ordinarily attend ballet performances would bring their families to see The Nutcracker as a holiday event. This was reinforced when ballet schools started performing The Nutcracker (with their students) as a way to raise funds. Companies and schools in countries in which the government provides more support than in the U.S. may not find it so critical to establish a Nutcracker season.

The calendar is showing both Forster and Royal dancing Albrecht in the 6/10 matinee of Giselle, opposite Shevchenko. Presumably one of them should have been assigned to the evening performance, with Murphy, which currently lacks an Albrecht. I guess that will be Forster, since he's dancing it with her when they are on the road.
The calendar has been corrected to show Royal with Shevchenko in the matinee and Forster with Murphy in the evening.

A number of ballet dancers have tattoos that are hidden by costume. I think Polunin's tattoos are more unusual in that they are in areas (his hands have "Natasha" tattooed on them -- oops) that are harder to hide by costume.
They also use makeup to cover the tattoos. Here is a link to a Washington Post article on this subject: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/theater_danc/ballet-dancers-with-skin-in-the-game/2016/11/23/2328c264-af96-11e6-ab37-1b3940a0d30a_story.html?utm_term=.7a6d15c2b0bc

I was on the Met Opera's website perusing Spring performances today, and curiously, though ABT has said nothing about it (as far as I know) Olga Smirnova is listed dancing with the company in the spring: two performances of Le Corsaire (as Guinare), Manon (as Lescaut's Mistress), Harlequinade (as Pierette) and Whipped Cream (as Princess Tea Flower.)
https://www.metopera.org/season/2019-abt/le-corsaire/
Is this perhaps a mistake on the Met's part? (There are other mistakes—Hee Seo is listed as dancing Prince Desire, for example.) I would be surprised if the Met let slip a Guest Artist before it was officially announced by ABT, but it seems like a difficult error to make accidentally on the Met's part.
If this is correct, she is replacing Stella Abrera in these performances. Stella is not listed among the performers.

I attended last night's performance. Hee Seo was replaced in Symphonie Concertante "due to injury". Shevchenko was the replacement; the other leads were Boylston and Hoven. I can't even imagine Hee keeping up with the fast footwork of this ballet. Shevchenko was gorgeous, and Hoven looked wonderful too. In fact the entire cast was excellent. I could watch this beautiful ballet every week. I have no idea why NYCB doesn't perform it.
I attended a dress rehearsal on Thursday afternoon. The first dance was Garden Blue, and Hee Seo was among the dancers. She was clearly inhibited while rehearsing, and at the end walked off with her hand on her ribcage. The next dance was Symphonie Concertante, with the Thursday night cast rehearsing. Hee Seo marked everything but the simplest movements, and again appeared to be in pain when it was over. I do not doubt that she is truly injured.

The lead male dancer for Woolf Works in NYC is now indicated on the ABT master calendar. The pairings listed in Josette's post will occur again at the Met, and Allesandra Ferri will perform with Herman Cornejo.
