Have a funny anecdote about Nora Kaye here. She was the original “Novice” in Jerome Robbins THE CAGE, and her husband was Hollywood film director Herbert Ross, and a good friend of mega producer Ray Stark of THE TURNING POINT. She had been a legendary star with both ABT (creating leads mostly in Tudor’s ballets) and NYCB where she mainly danced Robbins ballets. Temperamentally and physically she most resembles Ashley Bouder, both strong stage presences. When I started my Los Angeles Ballet she called for a meeting (more like a royal summons) and introduced me to Stark; sitting around her swimming pool. All so Beverly Hills it made me laugh. She wanted to be my co-director and do all the casting and repertory choices!!! For that she would bring in “Hollywood” money...she said. I politely declined saying that in effect that meant I’d be working for her...and the ONLY person I’d work for is George Balanchine. So...that was that. If she wanted to direct a ballet company she could just start one, like I did!
