Pavlova and Volinine

Recommended Posts

the attached scan of a publicity photo, from which the caption label has been removed but with a rubber stamped date of SEP 25, 1921(?) [the final numeral is incompletely inked], is almost certainly a promotion for Anna Pavlova's appearances in Clustine's SNOWFLAKES - see credits from NYPL below - being partnered by Aleksandr Volinine. (the same photo is reproduced, naming the ballet and the dancers but without a photographer's credit, in PAVLOVA: REPERTOIRE OF A LEGEND by John and Roberta Lazzarini, where it is described in part thus: "One-act ballet derived from the snowflake scene in Act 1 of Tchaikovsky's NUTCRACKER" with "choreography by Clustine, decor by Urban, and costumes by Korovin." and, "First performed in Chicago in October 1915 during Pavlova's appearances with the Boston Grand Opera Company.")

Snowflakes: Chor: Ivan Clustine; mus: Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (from The nutcracker); scen: Joseph Urban. Perf: Anna Pavlova Ballet. (Pavlova. Souvenir program 1923/24, p 9)
