Guest Fred C.
I had the extreme pleasure of dancing a Stanton Welch piece and hoping to see more companies picking him up as an emerging choreographer. Has anyone else seen or performed his work? Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
Hi Fred, welcome to Ballet Alert! I think you could throw a rock at half the ballet companies out there and hit a Stanton Welch work. They are in many repertories at this point. Link to comment
Old Fashioned
Have you seen his Madame Butterfly? I'm trying to decide if I want to go see HB do it or not this September. Link to comment
SusanB
I saw Madam Butterfly in Boston this past May and it was worth seeing. The pas de deux was beautiful, but a lot of the other dancing/acting was cliched to me, with exaggerated "Japanese" mannerisms. Also, I would have preferred that Stanton Welch not focus so much of the story line on Chio Chio San's renunciation of her faith. I've seen the opera at the Met and don't recall that being a major theme, but I certainly could be wrong. It felt like propaganda to me, personally. I don't much care for this genre of ballets including Snow Maiden, Cleopatra, Dracula, Hunchback of Notre Dame. I wonder if I have bad taste. Link to comment
dirac
If that's bad taste, many others who post here share it! (Although all shades of opinion are welcome.) I think Puccini probably regarded poor Cio-Cio San's renunciation of her faith as the least of her problems...... Link to comment
