A review of the Mariinsky Ballet by Hanna Weibye for The Arts Desk.

Quote

This was different, in part because it is so extraordinary to see those hyper-Russian, hyper-pedigree Mariinsky bodies moving in McGregor's familiar idiom: it recreates the wow factor of his early works with the Royal Ballet, before we all got used to the marriage of classical training and McGregor style. The most extreme sensation comes while watching Ekaterina Kondaurova, the principal they call Big Red, dancing the part created by Lauren Cuthbertson of the Royal Ballet, of a woman overwhelmed by intense but indistinct feelings (perhaps bitterness, perhaps loneliness). Kondaurova, with her angular height, her strength, her extreme flexibility, and a certain inward quality that bespeaks a focused mind and emotional intelligence, danced it like Sylvie Guillem would have. Unforgettable.

Ashley says: “It is the biggest challenge so far. Never before has an Indian has been invited by an international ballet company. As they have being performing ballet for 20 years, their technique is very different from ours.”

A review of the Mariinsky Ballet by Neil Norman in The Stage. Thanks to alert reader @mnacenani for the link!

The bewildered reactions of some audience members to Wayne McGregor’s Infra suggests that the followers of classical ballet companies are less adventurous than the companies themselves. Yet McGregor’s work – originally made at the Royal Ballet in 2008 – demands classical ballet training to interpret his alien, post-classical contortions and Mariinsky performs it with redoubtable attack.
