New York City Ballet's SPAC residency gets underway.

Quote

Finding his identity as a dancer as his career advances has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding for [Taylor] Stanley, who was promoted to principal dancer just over a year ago. "It can take a while to understand what this craft means to you personally," he said, to "look to other dancers as a mechanism of growth" rather than competition, and "to recognize my own strengths and weaknesses but know that they don't define who I am."

A last-minute change in the program order put the Balanchine first, followed by Martins and then Peck, exactly as it should be: a nutshell version of the evolution of NYCB—and ballet in general—over 60 years. It offered an electrifying glimpse of the total freedom that can be found within the form, and also a reassuring reminder of the restraint supporting that freedom.

A review of American Ballet Theatre by Alastair Macaulay in The New York Times.

Mr. Ratmansky is the finest choreographer working full-time in ballet today, but what’s going on in this waffly double duet? The dancers (Stella Abrera and Marcelo Gomes; Sarah Lane and Alban Lendorf are the first cast) are engaging, yet phrase by phrase this seems one of his most expressively incoherent creations. I sense no “lieu cher”; and nothing gets beneath the music’s surface. And excessive side lighting, by Brad Fields, makes it hard to identify the dancers.

The company’s famous speed and daring highlighted Peter Martins’ “Fearful Symmetries” and Justin Peck’s new “The Times Are Racing,” after NYCB co-founder George Balanchine’s glorious “Stars and Stripes,” usually an evening’s capper, opened the program.
