A review of American Contemporary Ballet by Lewis Segal in The Los Angeles Times.

The “Nutcracker” performances also included Fullington’s startling discovery in the notation archives: a charming dance for eight women performed to the music that normally accompanies the one and only male solo in the ballet, the Act 2 Tarantella. It was reportedly intended for the Sugar Plum Fairy’s retinue but hadn’t been danced anywhere in more than a century until Thursday. A real find — and a mystery.

A story on Noah Benzie- Drayton and Tyler Lindsay of the Perth School of Ballet.

Quote

Perth School of Ballet director Kathryn Harris said boys were still scarce in ballet studios.

It was more than six years since she last had a male student reach such a high level — “and now I’m here with two”.

A review of "Whipped Cream" by Joan Acocella in the June 19 issue of The New Yorker.

Quote

It would take a lot more than arresting design, however, to turn “Whipped Cream” into a first-rate ballet. What the makers were probably hoping for was a “spring ‘Nutcracker’ ”—that is, a ballet, like New York City Ballet’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” that people would take the kids to spring after spring. But to get repeaters, particularly children, a ballet has to have at least some dramatic force. “Whipped Cream” doesn’t, and it’s also very repetitive. When the drunken doctor appears for the third time, you want to say, “Him again?”

The Australian Ballet revives its production of "The Sleeping Beauty."

The Fairies’ Cavaliers, the Princes and Prince Désiré’s Friends are all splendidly cast, providing a multitude of opportunities for the dancers to shine. Ever expressive dancer Brett Chynoweth delivers wonderful work as Bluebird, keeping the character in constant fluid birdlike motion and dancing the deceptively difficult role with effortless lightness underpinned by steely strength. Chynoweth is ably partnered by Jade Wood as Princess Florine, the pair stopping the show during Aurora’s Wedding, the cherished third act of the ballet.

A profile of Forth Worth teacher and director Margo Dean.

Quote

The teacher obviously did not know Margo Dean very well. Nothing stops her.

Nothing stopped her when she opened the Margo Dean School of Ballet in her hometown of Fort Worth nearly 60 years ago. Nor when she started the Fort Worth Ballet Association, which is now Texas Ballet Theater, in the 1950s. Nor when she started Ballet Concerto Inc., a nonprofit performing arts and educational organization that is now in its 48th year.
