Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance

Recommended Posts

Just this morning, I got e-mail announcements of two dance shows that will be shown at the new Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance. It sounds like they are emulating the cinema broadcasts from Covent Garden and the Bolshoi.

It sounds like the NYCB Nutcracker is a recording from 2011, but I can't tell if the others are pre-existing recordings.

San Francisco Ballet kicks off the new cinema series with Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet on September 24 at 7:00pm. Shown at select cinemas nationwide, the screenings will feature the full production in HD, along with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. SF Ballet Principal Dancers Maria Kochetkova and Davit Karapetyan perform the title roles of Juliet and Romeo, with Company Principal Dancers Pascal Molat, Joseph Walsh, and Luke Ingham performing the roles of Mercutio, Benvolio, and Tybalt, respectively.

SF Ballet is one of four American dance companies that was selected for Great American Dance. The series continues with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on October 22, Ballet Hispanico on November 12, and New York City Ballet on December 5 and 7.

(I couldn't find a topic for this elsewhere. If I overlooked it, please move.)

I'm a little confused by the series title. Presumably, Romeo and Juliet was filmed in San Francisco. Was Ballet Hispanico filmed at the Joyce?

I was under the impression that New York City Ballet has long been equipped for HD transmission. If their media suite is finally going to be put to use, it will be a great thing indeed.

Interesting programming and scheduling. The Royal is scheduled to show their Romeo two days before the SFB program, and both programs have screenings on the same day in November. I imagine that NYC will get both programs, but that other theaters will choose one or the other.

Even though, this is a great addition to the possibilities!
