Joffrey 15-16 season

Ok, everyone is focused on the announcement that the company is replacing the Joffrey Nutcracker with a new production by Christopher Wheeldon, but they've announced the full season, and it's an odd line-up.

Lots of new (new to the company or new altogether) but aside from Ashton's Cinderella, and a short program for its gala show, really nothing that looks at their heritage repertory, either through restaging or bolstering that collection. Usually an anniversary season will make a bigger effort to reinforce their connection to their roots.

I'm surprised by the length of the Sylvia and Bold Moves runs, and consider it good news that the company feels it can fill the house for these... I would have thought longer runs would be reserved for old warhorses, or alternating rep. It looks like they are doing something similar with their programming this current season as well. Do the houses fill well?

Their would be no point to harkening back to their roots as it would be an experiment in a void. The old Joffrey has been dead and buried for a long time. If anything, the new Joffrey suggests a spin-off of the San Francisco Ballet, which would make sense as Ashley Wheater spent nearly 20 years there as a dancer, ballet master and associate artistic director.

bold: Yikes.

The rest: I'm quite new to the ballet world, so what do you mean by this? I take it's the repertoire that Wheater integrates.

Ok, everyone is focused on the announcement that the company is replacing the Joffrey Nutcracker with a new production by Christopher Wheeldon,

The Joffrey Nutcracker will be at the Kennedy Center over Thanksgiving weekend this year. Wed. 11/25 at 7:00 and Friday-Sunday at 1:00 and 7:00. Remember, DC empties out for Thanksgiving. I guess this is the last chance to see it on tour.

THE JOFFREY BALLET

Ashley C. Wheater, Artistic Director

FINAL D.C. PERFORMANCES OF ROBERT JOFFREY'S BELOVED VERSION OF THE BALLET!

THE NUTCRACKER

Conceived and directed by Robert Joffrey

Selected choreography by Gerald Arpino

Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra

"A theatrical event of irresistible power"

--The Washington Post

"A warm, lavish tribute to fantasy, family, and classic dance"

--The Chicago Tribune

Robert Joffrey's awe-inspiring staging of the perennial classic The Nutcracker will enjoy its final D.C. performances in the 20152016 season, as Chicago's world-renowned The Joffrey Ballet is set to premiere a new version in the company's hometown for future seasons. So bring your entire family to cherish and delight in this joyful holiday treat, a fairy-tale favorite that "could easily melt an old-fashioned snowstorm with its unique combination of warmth, charm, grandeur, and superb performances" (The Chicago Sun-Times)!

Boasting larger-than-life Victorian America scenery and costumes, entrancing storytelling, Tchaikovsky's beloved score, and invigorating dancing that could only be found in a dream, Robert Joffrey's "elegantly unified production" (The Washington Post) brings the magic of the season to life like no other Nutcracker. The ballet swirls with heroic toy soldiers, sword-fighting mice, the glittering Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, crowd-pleasing waltzes and folk divertissements, a giant Mother Ginger puppet from the creator of Big Bird, and a journey to the Kingdom of Sweets--all the extraordinary vision of a wide-eyed young girl.

Following tradition, dozens of local children will join the company on stage, while D.C.-area youth choir members from Arlington Children's Chorus lend their voices to what is heralded as the most spectacular Snow Scene today, featuring a parade of ballerina-snowflakes that will take your breath away.

Performance Timing: Act I - 50 min.; Intermission - 20 min.; Act II - 52 min.
