Ismene Brown on Nikolai Tsiskaridze's dismissal from the Bolshoi Theatre:


The celebrated star of the Bolshoi, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, has been told his contracts will not be renewed when they expire at the end of this month - an effective dismissal for Russia's flamboyant and outspoken ballet icon.

The dancer is currently embroiled in a vitriolic lawsuit with his Bolshoi bosses over media interviews he has given since the acid attack on the Bolshoi ballet director Sergei Filin, in which he has questioned whether Filin was genuinely injured and has accused the theatre management of manipulating the incident to get rid of Tsiskaridze.

Furthermore. the center’s Ballet Across America venture brings nine American companies to Washington for a week. Each presents a single one-act ballet so that there are three different triple bills. Last week was the third season of this project — once biennial, now triennial — which admirably enriches knowledge of this country’s highly diverse ballet scene.

Would that Garland had explored blues moods more deeply, but he never forgot the difference between mere movement and dance in making the piece or setting it on his soloists - Ashley Murphy, Da’von Doane, Stephanie Rae Williams, Anthony Savoy , Samuel Wilson, Dustin James, Chrystyn Fentroy and Francis Lawrence. That Harlem’s director, Virginia Johnson, chose “Return” for showing off her company also bodes well for the group’s future.
