British Newspapers - Digitised Online Archive

"19th-century newspapers resurrected online" is an article about "the beginning of a long-term project to digitise large parts of the vast collection of 750 million newspaper pages held by the British Library stretching into the 20th century."

The British Newspapers Website:

"The 19th Century British Library Newspapers collection contains full runs of 48 newspapers specially selected by the British Library to best represent nineteenth century Britain.

You may view as much of the freely available content as you wish. Free content is clearly marked when you are viewing the results of your search. A search for "ballerina" in the free content produced an article about Taglioni's return to England as a "Professor of and Dancing Deportment"...

“...and the re-apparition of Madame Taglioni, while stimulating the curiosity of a generation which till now has not been privileged to see her, may be of substantial benefit to the young people of Britain and may, through their manners, correct their minds.

A Stage Romance. The chequered life of Taglioni.
