Merce in California

Recommended Posts

There's a review in the ballet.co magazine by Renee Renouf of the Merce Cunningham Company in California:

Merce Cunningham Dance Company

In Merce Cunningham's native state of Washington there is an empty 2,000,000 gallon cistern which provided the setting for the recording of Underground Overlay. It provides a 45 second reverberation, augmented by conch shells of three different sizes sounded at various points in the composition and from various locations in the auditorium. With Cunningham's continued fascination in chance and separating choreography from musical background, the dancers, garbed in black, seemed to move in some strange ritual. Gallo's costumes exhibited little change except where sheen would be reflected in one place on one dancer, the straps of another strung differently over the back or shoulder; nothing overly obvious.

And a review on DanceView Times by Rita Felciano:

Engraved Images

Mark Lancaster's golden theater curtain is witty. It looks like leftover velvet from some tiny baroque theater, much too small for a modern stage. There is something pompous and musty smelling about its drooping fabric and hanging scallops. It hangs stolidly and puts up such a solid front. And of course, Cunningham's dancers, slip and tear through it like spirits propelling themselves through walls. Lancaster also dressed the dancers with matching golden tops but then put them in light blue tights which stand out against the curtain. They look fresh and airy with all that gold. They also show the lines of the legs and nicely delineate well-formed butts with which the company is so generously endowed
