  1. Would anyone have an idea of the casting for La Bayadère in Ottawa February 24-27?
  2. The opening night was yesterday, I hope that someone attended and will post here!
  3. In preparation for the 2010 Olympics, Igor Markov is working with Mariinsky Theater's Ulyana Lopatkina; would any of you have information on this choreographer and his works?
  4. Would anyone know about the recent premiere of the ballet Fadette/Fadetta in Perm by Boyarchnikov? Is it based on Lavrosky's ballet? Is it using music from Sylvia?
  5. What a nice piece of dance... lovely. The studio reminds me (somehow) of the one used for one of Cyd Charisse's dance, just forgot the name, duet in an absolutely beautiful draped dress with laced top, she enters in a green cape... Forgot the title!
  6. I recently saw on youtube with Noella Pontois and Denis Ganio and I was wondering which version it was... anyone know?
  7. For those who also saw the video production of 1970 with Terekhova, how does it compare?
  8. This does not directly answer the question, but it needs to be said. I think the most frustrating experience of watching and ballet film happens when close-ups are made, it prevents you from seeing the choreography, kind of like if you would be listening to an orchestra playing a symphony, and I cut all the instruments for you to hear the flute... whole bodies interpret dance pieces.
  9. I'm shocked and wished it was not true. Her death affects way too many people and puts a stop to her incredible talent for giving and teaching her knowledge, she certainly cannot be replaced. She has to have been the ballerina I enjoyed watching the most. I feel for all the people she left so tragically.
  10. What about a full Mamzelle Angot?
  11. Mel had an interesting answer to this question, which I asked last year: http://ballettalk.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=27605
  12. I was wondering if in the last act's PDD, she did the "shoulder rolls" that Kitri does in Cuba? For me this is what made me twitch, but I do enjoy the Cuban balance.
  13. Cannot wait to read about it and am sure it was worth the extreme traveling experience!!!
  14. The Raymonda released on DVD? Can't wait to see it Allash's beautiful lines again. I remember that she almost fell after stepping on Jean de Brienne's cape during the pas de deux, he caught her but they missed a lift. I don't remember who danced de Brienne, Filin or Uvarov?
  15. Well, I went to the screening Sunday in Montreal and enjoyed it. I'm glad that we have this opportunity and hope that the audience for the sceenings will grow in the coming months. I taught that Carlos Acosta gave a very expressive interpretation of the role. Kaptsova also gives a fine interpretation and left me wanting to see her Giselle. Maria Allash was absolutely beautiful in Aegina, what a fine dancer she is - I only saw her Raymonda when it was shown live on the web a few years ago. Volchkov is a fine dancer but I felt that his Crassus was not convincing, he would be better suited for prince roles.
  16. Thank you rg for posting Pomerantseva's picture!
  17. I believe that the hat turns automatically; you might see better how he stops it on a clip on youtube hosted by Claude Bessy.
  18. I recently watched an excerpt of Giselle featuring Lorena Feijoo in Giselle showing a solo variation in act one that I have not seen or heard before. The music is mainly played by a flute and the variation starts with entrechat quatre - balloté par- terre - jeté and ends with the typical manège of tours piqués... Is this on music by Adam? Who choreographed this variation? Is it included in the pas des paysans?
  19. I've seen the DVD - many times as it is one of my favorites - as well as the live production. In the DVD production, Khabibulina makes for an innocent and very moving Esmeralda. If I recall, there are several cuts in the DVD compared to the live production, one being an important scene in the first act with Frollo and the corps de ballet part at the beginning of the second act, the "Diana & Acteon" divertissement is also left out (but I don't recall seeing it either in the live production). You will recognize the music in the second act pd2 with Fleur-de-Lys as the one in Bayadere, where Nikia dances holding flowers - fleurs de lys actually. The style is probably very Perrot-like and reminiscent of Giselle, and the music just as beautiful and haunting.
  20. The studio floors at the Vaganova Academy in St.Petersburg are also raked, is it generally the case of other schools in Russia and Europe, where the theater stages are raked?
  21. What a coincidence, I am currently reading this book! Mr. van Dantzig gives the story from a choreographer's angle with details on what it is like to rehearse a new cast for a ballet and on the creating process, and on dealing with complex personalities. It also gives an insight on how Nureev worked and related to other dancers, and choreographers. I find it fascinating.
  22. Thank you Natalia for your help. I remember that Sergeev went on stage at the end of the performance and the conducter's name could be Liuter, or Luther.
  23. I recently watched a full version of the Fairy Doll, filmed at the Maryinsky several years ago and danced it seems by the students of the Vaganova Academy, and as there is no generic listing the dancers, I was wondering if any of the lead dancers later joined the Theater. The whole ballet is charming and the variations quite difficult and wonderfully performed, the costumes absolutely beautyful. I was also charmed by the music and thought I recognized the main waltz as being used in another ballet, but could not pinpoint it. Would anyone have details on this recording?
