I would love to see Angle in Symphony in Three Movements - he has just the right, er, angular presence for it. Sylve also seems to have the right body type, and I see she's cast for Friday.

And is Igor Zelensky back as a guest artist? That's a surprise.

Interesting that Tewsley is doing "Symphonic Dances" - that seems to be one of those Peter Martins creations almost always cast with male leads that remind Peter Martins of Peter Martins. Nilas has done it, Nikolaj Hubbe has done it - and while I've never seen Robert Tewsley in person, the photos I've seen suggest he looks rather like Peter Martins.

Ask la Cour, you might as well just buy the soundtrack now.

Oh Juliet, as a Zelensky admirer I thought you would have seen Zelensky in Western Symphony. I hope you're going to come up for his appearances. He was wonderful in Western Symphony, but he was a decidedly Russian cowboy. I'll never forget the fun he used to get up to with Monique Meunier and Aura Dixon (in another cast) in the Rondo, especially when the last movement's leads move over to the side while the rest of the company dances. The Rondo principals chat and flirt. Well Meunier and Dixon always looked like they were enjoying Zelensky's attentions!

As far as I know, Zelensky has not danced much or if at all since he was supposed to guest during the 2001 Nutcracker run. He suffered a severe injury that required surgery. I'm glad he hasn't held the company responsible :) and that he's back at least for two nights. I've missed IZ in many roles at NYCB, but at least the door appears to be open to drop by once a year.

Nope, I've missed the Cowboy Cameos! I am going to try and see him--he's one I'll always travel for.

I am also glad to see that he is dancing this winter--I saw him at SAB Workshop in June and he said he'd be around all summer (all the Kirov cronies were in town, although he didn't dance...) so I am happy to hear that he'll be doing some shows.....I'd love to see him do Vienna Waltzes (looking at the winter repertory....)

Zelensky was unforgetable in Vienna Waltzes - so romantic, so sexy. Unfortunately, he's in NY for just two performance. And according to the Darcey Bussell website's latest newsletter, he is returning from a bad back injury. Still, I can live with him popping into town every season to do a little something with his old company. Here's the NYCB press release:

January 7, 2003

IGOR ZELENSKY, PRINCIPAL DANCER WITH THE KIROV BALLET, TO DANCE WITH NEW YORK CITY BALLET AS GUEST ARTIST

Igor Zelensky, a Principal Dancer with The Kirov Ballet, will appear with New York City Ballet for two performances during the second week of the Company’s 2003 Winter Repertory Season at the New York State Theater.

Mr. Zelensky is scheduled to dance George Balanchine’s Western Symphony on Wednesday, January 15 at 8 p.m., and on Sunday, January 19 at 3 p.m.

Mr. Zelensky joined The Kirov Ballet in 1988 and became a Principal Dancer in 1991. At the Kirov, Mr. Zelensky’s repertory includes principal roles in the full-length classics, as well as roles in such works as George Balanchine’s Apollo, Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, and Jewels.

From 1992 to 1997 Mr. Zelensky was a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, where his repertory included works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Peter Martins. Mr. Zelensky has also appeared as a principal guest artist with The Royal Ballet.
