I'm reading "I, Maya Plisetskaya" (Maya's autobiography) at the moment and was stopped in my tracks by a passage at the beginning of Chapter 16 where she remarks that she danced "Swan Lake" more than 800 times, between 1947 and 1977. And she names 48 cities in which she danced it. (Other cities, one gathers, were not worth mentioning.)
Now some of these would presumably be character or corps de ballet parts....but even so, can the figure of 800 possibly be true?
How often do most ballerinas dance "Swan Lake" in a year or a lifetime?
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Another World Record?
