I just came across two observations by the critic Edwin Denby, both from a 1954 review of a "Stars of Russian Ballet" film. The first may be a bit out of date. (Or not, depending on the film.)

... film all over the world is poor at catching the beauty and very good at catching the silliness of any ballet.
.
Film is like a scatterbrain with a beady swivel eye. Its field of vision is totally unlike that of a theater seat.
