More Ballet on TV recently

Recommended Posts

* Lauren Anderson of Houston Ballet was featured on CBS Sunday Morning this past Sunday...I seem to think that this was a repeat of an earlier show but perhaps I'm wrong.

* Royal Swedish Ballet's 'Nutcracker' was on A&E Breakfast with the Arts a couple of Sundays ago. This past Sunday, they reprised the most recent Sylvie Guillem documentary.

* Natl Ballet of Canada principals, Sonia Rodriguez & Rex Harrington, danced 'Summer' from Kudelka's 'The Four Seasons' on an NBC-TV ice-skating special, 'Kurt Browning's Gotta Skate.' [Rodriguez is married to Browning, who is a huge figure skating star in his native Canada.] This one really took me by surprise; my parents had taped a bunch of skating for me during autumn, while I was in Cental Asia & Russia...I just looked at some of my videos this past weekend. I think that the Browning special aired in late Nov/early December. One would hope that many skating fans fell in love with ballet after seeing this; it was a lovely & tastefully-conceived special with a theme of linking skating & dancing. Broadway stars Ann Reinking, Tommy Tune & Ben Vereen also took part.

There was some ballet on the French TV also (mostly on the cultural channel Arte): a documentary about the former POB principal Fanny Gaïda (unfortunately, it was filmed very badly, and the film director talked more about herself than about Gaïda), Lacotte's "Coppélia" danced by the POB school, Petit's "Clavigo" with Le Riche, Osta and Gillot, and yesterday the "Homage to Kochno" which was danced by the POB recently, including Balanchine's "Prodigal son" with Letestu and Bélingard.

Unfortunately, I think that it won't last- often channels show more ballet in the Christmas period but forget it the rest of the year...

Also there are two cable channels, Mezzo and Muzzik, devoted to classical music, opera and dance. I don't know anybody who gets them (myself I have no TV) and it's a bit frustrating because they have some very interesting programs sometimes, for example yesterday they were showing Ashton's "Cinderella" with Dowell and Sibley...

Twice during December (as I was channel surfing), I came across what I think (not sure) was the Joffery Ballet's Nutcracker. At the end, Clara sails up and away in hot air balloon - IS that the Joffery version?

Some of costumes were quite........"interesting" wink.gif

The Joffrey Ballet's production of THE NUTCRACKER does end in true Victorian fashion, with Clara in a hot air balloon.

The scenery was Oliver Smith's last project and the costumes are by John David Ridge. You might have noticed that the Victorian Bouquet of flowers given to Clara in the party scene transformed in to live flowers dancing the Waltz in Act II. Each flower has a name, i. e. Pansy, Rose, Cornflower, and her costume represents her flower.

Both designers were very close to Mr. Joffrey, and worked to create his vision of Victorian America.

THE NUTCRACKER was sadly, Mr. Joffrey's last project.
