Natalia
Opening the thread to discuss this year's Vaganova Acad graduation performances at the Mariinsky (June 10, 12 & 14), as well as one guest performance in Moscow later in the month. Program: Bournonville's CONSERVATOIRE Lev Ivanov's LISZT HUNGARIANRHAPSODY Lavrovsky's PROKOFIEV CLASSICAL SYMPHONY Petipa's PAQUITA GRAND PAS Photos of yesterday's dress rehearsal are found here: http://melmoth.blog/tagged/2017 graduation What gorgeous, natural-fabric tutus! Notice that the Vaganova Acad is presenting a traditional Paquita Grand Pas (staged by Burlaka & Tsiskaridze), rather than the grand pas from the recent Yuri Smekalov version of Paquita shown at the 2017 Mariinsky ballet festival. This segment will be led by she who many consider the "star" of this graduation class: Eleonora Sevenard...who happens to be the great-niece of Mathilde Kchessinskaya! Feature on Russian TV on Ms Sevenard: https://topspb.tv/news/2017/06/6/naslednaya-graciya-vnuchataya-plemyannica-matildy-kshesinskoj-gotovitsya-k-vypusknomu-balu/ Link to comment
Natalia
Another Russian TV look at the preparations for this year's performances (several nice clips of the Bournonville): Just imagine if American TV would do features on SAB workshops! http://tvkultura.ru/video/show/episode_id/1510381/video_id/1638125/brand_id/1972/ Link to comment

But imagine if CNN or the regular broadcast stations would take an interest in the SAB graduations the way that Russia cares about its young classical artists & the classical arts, in general. Any year. Link to comment

Natalia
A 2-minute Russian TV report of yesterday's opening concert, during which the USA's Oscar Frame (late of DC's Kirov Academy, at the Vaganova since Feb 2016) is interviewed. http://www.vesti.ru/videos/show/vid/719558/ Link to comment
Natalia
Courtesy of the Vaganova Acad FB, pics of the June 10 performance of one of the gems of the traditional (Pugni music) version of LITTLE HUMPBACKED HORSE...the luxurious Imperial Tsarist edition: the Hungarian Rhapsody from Act IV. Will somebody please consult the Harvard notes to restore the full ballet, so that we may be rid of the Ratmansky-Schedrin "El Cheapo" edition? This Rhapsody was restored by Prof. Irina Gensler according to her recollections. https://m.facebook.com/academyvaganova/photos/pcb.1290310447734904/1290309721068310/?type=3&source=48 Link to comment
Helene
The Ratmansky version is one of my favorite full-length ballets, so I hope they never get rid of it. I think there is room for both. Link to comment
tutu
Videos are starting to pop up on YouTube, especially under the user Leo Petit, who has uploaded Classical Symphony and Paquita in full. Really fantastic stuff. Link to comment

Does anyone know the name of the young woman who danced the variation in Paquita that comes right before the ballerina's variation --in this performance, right before Sevenard? Parts of it have sort of Spanish arms. Edited to add: youtube channel RussianBalletVideos2 identifies her as Alexandra Khiteeva and says she will graduate in 2019. Natalia
Gorgeous!!! I still can't believe the richness of the designs for a "ballet academy" show but then this is not just any "Dollie Dinkle" school. Thanks for the vid links, Tutu. Link to comment
toitoi43
As for Oscar Frame, he studied at Kirov before HET and Vaganova, however he is from the UK. Link to comment
Natalia
Russian TV report on the actual graduation ceremony at the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo, outside St-P. "Ballet Tsar" Tsiskaridze looks very comfy on the balcony. Боже, Царя храни! http://tvkultura.ru/video/show/episode_id/1516839/video_id/1645330/brand_id/19725/ Link to comment
Balletfreak
The Vaganova graduation doesn't look like a student performance at all. It often looks more like a world class company performance. The corps dancing is so coordinated, I honestly think they sometimes outshine the Mariinski corps. My all-time favourite Vaganova graduation performance was Laurencia in 2015, with Renata Shakirova as Laurencia and Olga Makarova's sublime character role. I've never seen anything like it. With such great recent perfomances there must be a lot of pressure for next year. Link to comment
