An interview with Marriner late in life:

Quote

"My Dad was a carpenter, and his great passion was music," he says. "We lived in Lincoln, and there was a definite class divide in the town. The cathedral was at the top of the hill, and the people there were middle class and performed Bach. We working-class people were down in the town, and we were what you'd call primitive Methodist. We preferred Handel."
