Swan Lake and Mirrors

We are nearing the end of the ballet season in Boston. I really enjoyed Swan Lake this time around, as I feel the dancers have really settled into their roles this year (this is a repeat from last year). The Smoke & Mirrors program is a mixed bag. I particularly liked "Belong," which was choreographed by Norbert Vesak for Evelyn Hart and David Peregrine. I believe they performed it in Varna to standing ovations and numerous curtain calls. I saw it on opening night with Eris Nezha and Lia Cirio. The audience went wild. Additionally, Yury Yanowsky, a former principal with the company, choreographed a ballet entitled, "Smoke & Mirrors," which uses innovative costumes for partnering. It's a good program to see.

The "Belong" pas de deux was part of a larger ballet called What to Do Till the Messiah Comes, and if memory serves, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet premiered it in 1973, three-plus years before Evelyn Hart joined the company. (I believe at that point Hart hadn't even entered the RWB School.) Peregrine also joined the company a couple of years after its creation. But certainly the pas de deux became indelibly linked with Hart's performance, and for years--decades, really--I couldn't even imagine anyone else dancing

Thanks for that background, volcanohunter. Although an older piece of choreography, for me, it was mesmerizing. I actually thought it would be my least favorite of the evening and it ended up being my favorite. Just a man and woman and dance - where have we heard that one before? I wanted to get to Boston to see it again, but I have not been able to do so.

I posted already, and I know there are very few Boston fans on BA, but last chance to see Swan Lake (Gonzalo Garcia is guesting) and to see the Mirrors program. "Belong" is worth the ticket price alone!
