Berlin Staatsballet 16/17 Season

Recommended Posts

Berlin just announced 2016/17 season to be performed over 3 venues(Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper im Schiller Theater, Komische Oper Berlin): http://www.staatsballett-berlin.de/en/presse/mitteilungen/02-03-2016/55

New Nutcracker by Nacho Duato replacing Medvedev and Burlaka's reconstructed version

Swan Lake

Sleeping Beauty

Jewels

Giselle

Onegin

A double bill by Maillot & Millepied (Daphnis et Chloe)

Duato's "Multiplicity"

A double bill by Duato and Hofesh Shechter

A triple bill by Duato and Kylián

A triple bill by Duato, Kylián, and Naharin

Duato's "Herrumbre"

All in all a very Duato-centric season.

That the lovely new-old Imperial Russian Nutcracker is being replaced so quickly by Duato's version is an abomination. I suppose it's all about who gets royalties for his/her version, rather than art. Same thing in most places now. Sad.

I'm not sure it's about royalties per se -- starting a couple of years ago, we've been seeing a lot of Nuts turn over, and we'll see even more with next season. I need to do a little homework on this, but I have a feeling there's something universal going on.

Though it is interesting that, in a period where there's renewed interest in heritage productions, this one would be scheduled to change out.

I'm a little surprised Duato was able to persuade the theater to ditch the Burlaka/Medvedev production after what must have been a substantial investment to stage it in the first place. I've seen it only on video and have mixed feelings about it--I wish it had really been a reconstruction--but I'm sure it cost a small fortune to mount. However, if the Berlin State Ballet will be sharing the physical production with La Scala and/or the Mikhailovsky, perhaps Duato was able to argue that his Nutcracker wouldn't cost the theater all that much.

Well, I guess it truly is his company now.

Duato will be succeeded by Sasha Waltz and Johannes Öhman. I'm surprised the change has been announced so far in advance. Is the idea to make Duato a lame duck? Will dancers begin leaving in the near future?

Vladimir Malakhov does not seem sorry to see Duato go, but has already declared the proposed co-intendantship to be a bad idea.

An online petition protesting the appointments of Waltz and Öhman has been launched. It is signed "we, the dancers of the Staatsballett Berlin." I don't know whether the feeling is unanimous, but the petition is making the rounds online through the social media accounts of company dancers.

The petition is also linked on the company's official site and its Facebook page.
