Julian MacKay is the very first full American graduate from the prestigious The Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, and he will be joining London's The Royal Ballet this summer. We shot in the Manhattan mist this afternoon and I felt like I was photographing history.

In time for the RB's summer tour?

As a Prix de Lausanne winner, the Royal Ballet was an option for him.

I think the bigger question is what was the last decade in which the Royal Ballet filed its ranks primarily from the school, particularly through the upper ranks?

The Royal Ballet is one of the many partners of the Prix de Lausanne, just as there are many ballet schools partnering with Prix. Some winners will take up the offer to join a particular partner Ballet school, or an apprenticeship with a professional ballet company.

The Royal Ballet has also taken on over five Apprentices from The Royal Ballet School who'll be joining for a year, besides Julian Mackay.

It gives a young dancer the opportunity to observe, learn and work alongside professional dancers.

An Apprenticeship does not offer a guarantee of permanent employment. That is entirely at a Director's discretion once an Apprentice's year has expired.

The Royal Ballet has been filing up its ranks with many dancers coming out of The Royal Ballet School since Mr. Kevin O'Hare became a Director.

As a matter of fact, the ranks up to and including Soloist level already have a majority of RBS trained dancers. Over the next couple of years the First Soloist rank will also fill up with RBS trained dancers as several Soloists are being prepared for First Soloist level. Out of those, several will reach Principal level, but it takes time to build up a Company from the bottom upwards.

Those days when the RB hired dancers mostly from abroad are no longer since the AD changed a few years ago.

Here are the names of some RBS trained dancers who look likely to make their way through the ranks.

James Hay (Soloist) debut in the lead male role in Rhapsody Feb 2014; debuts 2014-15 season Symphonic Variations (Brian Shaw role) ; Alain.

Francesca Hayward (First Artist) debut in the ballerina role in Rhapsody with James Hay Feb 2014; debuts 2014-15 season as Alice and Manon and due to dance her first Juliet 2015-16 season.

Yasmine Naghdi (First Artist) debuts 2014-15 season Symphonic Variations and Olga in Onegin with Matthew Ball as Lensky and due to dance her first Juliet with Matthew Ball 2015-16 season.

Matthew Ball (Artist, recent graduate) debut as Lensky 2014-15 season and due to dance his first Romeo 2015-16.

Reece Clarke (Artist) graduated Summer 2014, debut 2014-15 season Symphonic Variations(Michael Somes role).

Hay and Hayward's debut in Ashton's Rhapsody would have been outstanding if they had been experienced dancers but as young inexperienced dancers it was extraordinary.Hayward's Manon was exceptional and her Alice actually persuaded me that Alice was a ballet rather than an entertainment. The downside is that she is due to dance her first Juliet with Matthew Golding. So far most of us are still in the dark as to why he was invited to joined the company .

.Naghdi and Ball were generally judged to be the best couple dancing Olga and Lensky in the 2015 run of performances of Onegin. Ball who had no previous experience of dancing important roles displayed exceptional maturity as a performer.Clarke who was an impressive Jean de Brienne at his graduation performance of Nureyev's Raymonda Act III did not look out of place on the stage in Symphonic Variations dancing with Nunez and he grew with each performance.

That's a very encouraging report smile.png ; hope we get glimpses of some of them when the Royal comes to U.S. even if only in lesser roles...

Correction:

Yasmine Naghdi and Francesca Hayward are already Soloists (not First Artists/Corps)

In New York Yasmine Naghdi will be dancing a Principal role in Wayne McGregor's "Infra". I believe her partner will be Matthew Ball. Francesca Hayward is also dancing a Principal role, in the same work. James Hay will be dancing "Le Train Bleu".

Other Royal Ballet School trained dancers to watch out for in New York are Marcelino Sambe, Luca Acri, Calvin Richardson, Valentino Zucchetti, Claire Calvert, Trystan Dyer, and of course Principals Vadim Muntagirov, Steven Mcrae, Laura Morera, Edward Watson and Lauren Cuthbertson.

Naghdi, Hayward, Hay, Calvert (Soloists), Watson and Cuthbertson (Principals) and Ball (Artist) were fully trained at the RBS since age 11. The others joined at Upper School level, at the age of 16.
