Terez
Phew. Glad to see that msg from the SFB regarding Kochetkova remaining. Was having an anxious few minutes there, reading all the news about the ABT promotions. Thanks for posting that, volcanohunter. Link to comment
pherank
Today's Instagram posting from Mathilde Froustey: 1st rehearsal of the principal part of Theme and Variations today after 1 month off ... Ouch !!!!!!!!! Link to comment
Helene
"Theme and Variations" is the closer for POB's 2015-16 season opening Robbins/Millepied/Balanchine program that runs from September 22-October 11. Link to comment
PeggyTulle
It's (well, the pdd and finale are) also on SF Ballet's program for Stern Grove. Link to comment
Helene
Hmmmm...maybe there's still hope? Link to comment
pherank
Anyone recognize the Repetiteur/Ballet Mistress in this short rehearsal video?https://twitter.com/lapetitefrench_/status/619280925600256005 Link to comment
PeggyTulle
My initial thought was maybe Elyse Borne, but it's too grainy to be sure. Link to comment
pherank
My initial thought was maybe Elyse Borne, but it's too grainy to be sure. That's a good guess, PeggyTulle - I wouldn't know her voice, myself, but that does look like Borne. Link to comment
apollosmuse
And Froustey's Instagram definitely suggests she's back in SF. Link to comment
pherank
The SF Ballet Blog has an article about the dancer's 2015 summer vacations. And Jahna Frantziskonis, who is coming from PNB, mentions that her brother goes to school at SF Ballet School, and she will be able to live with him:http://www.sfballetblog.org/2015/07/i-know-what-you-did-this-summer/I often wonder how the new dancers manage to find decent places to live in the hugely overpriced city. Helene
It's remarkable that they are able to. Messmer said she and her partner got a deal, because he is a carpenter and put in work on the place, and she came in with a soloist's salary. Link to comment
California
I often wonder how the new dancers manage to find decent places to live in the hugely overpriced city. Is SF really any worse than New York City, London, or Paris? I would imagine there's a lot of doubling and tripling up in cramped quarters in many cities! Link to comment
pherank
Is SF really any worse than New York City, London, or Paris? I would imagine there's a lot of doubling and tripling up in cramped quarters in many cities! I've yet to know of someone not complaining about SF real estate and rental prices. ;) I remember Froustey mentioning that it was much easier finding an apartment in Paris than SF. The tech boom in the Bay Area is largely responsible for things getting out of hand. SF is really small in terms of physical space, so it's kinda inevitable that the actual city of SF becomes wholly gentrified as the local population swells. "The population of roughly 825,000 in 2012 will have steadily increased to a milestone by 2032, when a projected 1 million people will make their home inside city limits, according to an upcoming report from the Association of Bay Area Governments. By 2040, the report speculates that the growth rate will begin to level out at 1,085,700." --The Examiner Personally, I don't want to be around to experience a million+ people jammed into that little peninsula. pherank
SFB's Instagram page happened to have this "turning" moment with Jahna Frantziskonis: https://instagram.com/p/6SoUZCsj7j/?taken-by=sfballet I'm going to have to ask: What is the correct pronunciation of her last name? Link to comment
Helene
The way I've heard her name pronounced at Q&A's is: John-na Fran-tsis-koh-nis. Link to comment

PeggyTulle
From SFB's September News to the press yesterday: Clara Blanco Departs to Teach Soloist Clara Blanco will leave SF Ballet to serve as both a ballet teacher and head of the classical dance department at Escuela Profesional de Danza de Castilla y León, in her hometown of Valladolid, Spain. As part of her application to the government-funded Conservatory, Blanco underwent rigorous exams and interviews, and both of her new appointments with the School are for life. Blanco trained at the Estudio de Danza María de Avila as well as the San Francisco Ballet School, before joining the Company in 2001 as a corps de ballet member. During her tenure at SF Ballet (with the exception of a year at Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2006), Blanco performed a diverse repertory that included works by George Balanchine, August Bournonville, Val Caniparoli, Michel Fokine, James Kudelka, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Yuri Possokhov, Alexei Ratmansky, and Christopher Wheeldon, among many others. Helene
Congratulations to Ms. Blanco! She is a lovely dancer. Link to comment
Dreamer
Best wishes to Clara Blanco. I was hoping to see more of her in the coming season since I always enjoyed her dancing - elegant, effortless, musical - but can understand that this was a career opportunity she didn't want to miss. pherank
It is sad to see her go, but it's great to hear that she has a definite career path opening up for her. Most of us remember her as simply the best animated ballerina doll - in Act 1 of The Nutcracker. But that ability may have forced her into dancing that particular role far more than she actually wanted. Link to comment
Terez
Well, two big pieces of news -- and yet, both of them, not unexpected. Happy for all of us that Froustey is staying, and wishing the best for Bianco in her new endeavors! Link to comment
Josette
I don't think I've seen her on stage the past two seasons and kept hoping I would see her again. Clara Blanco was a distinctive, special, and lovely dancer, but it sounds like a terrific career she has in front of her. Link to comment
