Got back from the theater a few minutes ago--though it was (overall) terrific.

Wish the Royal were bringing this on tour as their full-length work rather than Don Quixote.

Anyway, a very enjoyable evening.

Seen it last night in Las Vegas@7pm. It was wonderful, my favorite Ashton ballet. Natalia and Steven were very good together. Although she was excellent overall, there was something missing in her performance. IMO, Lesley Collier is still the best Lise i have seen. Was it a taped performance?

Saw this cast live in London on the 30th and thought both McCrae and Osipova were fantastic. I think this is a good role for Osipova, I enjoyed her characterization of Lise. I was worried I would be disappointed after seeing Nunez but I wasn't.

I love love love this ballet. Ashton really gives Colas a lot to dance, instead of just being background for the woman. McCrae is amazing, I look forward to seeing him with ABT this year.

Thanks for these links -- I wasn't able to get to the theater for this screening. I loved Collier's comments about Ashton's inner ballerina. But do you suppose that they actually eat any of those lovely pastries?

There are a number of different recordings of Fille available already including one with Collier and, in that context, I am happy to add Osipova to the mix. She is not an Ashton specialist, but she is very suited to Lise and dances and performs the role quite wonderfully. At this stage of her career I would not buy a DVD of an Osipova Swan Lake, but I would definitely be happy to own a DVD of the HD broadcast I saw of the Osipova-McRae Fille.

All the same I can understand the frustration of those who believe that Roberta Marquez's performance from three years ago was superior, and that it may have been more deserving of a DVD release.

Your post sent me to youtube where there is a 10 minute excerpt of that performance. It looks very good, but by no means more supple in the upper body than Osipova which surprised me, as that's what I expected; at times even a little less so. That's a quality I look for in Ashton specialists. Anyway, comparing that 10 minute portion--and allowing that I have seen neither dancer dance the role live--I decidedly prefered Osipova...who performed with great charm--though less "softly" than Marquez, not at all harshly--and whose speed and buoyancy and vivacity are not only remarkable but not alien to Ashton's Lise at all.

That said, I don't doubt Osipova is getting all these DVD releases because she is marketable; I just think in this case, a DVD of her performance is certainly deserved outside questions of marketability. (Though she may become even better in the role after she has danced it still more.) Of course, I would be delighted to have the chance to see both ballerinas as Lise in the theater (theater theater, not movie theater). In a perfect world it would be possible to have DVDs of all the top ballerinas performing their best roles!
