I saw this production when it was new: bright and colorful, a bit cartoonish, but that's OK for Don Q. I'm seeing Chung/Domitro, Froustey/Quenedit and Feijoo/Luiz, all of whom should be good. I saw Chung last time around and she (predictably) was a delight, although she injected a note of unintentional humor when she came out for the Act 3 wedding pdd wearing one ankle warmer.

I have a ticket for the recently added matinee on Saturday, March 28, and will finally get to see Mathilde Froustey in a full-length ballet. I'm also seeing Yuan Yuan Tan and Tiit Helimets guest in a full-length Swan Lake with a local company affiliated with a dance school, Festival Ballet, I believe, in Irvine next weekend.

I'm looking forward to everyone's impressions. It seemed odd to me that the opening cast was dancing one time - good thing the March 28th shows were added.

The list of principals NOT dancing Don Q is curious: Sofiane Sylve, Luke Ingham, Joseph Walsh, Tiit Helimets, Yuan Yuan Tan (that explains Tan and Helimets appearing in Southern Cal soon). I'm guessing some of these dancers just didn't care enough to go through it again - too much effort for a single evening performance.

Edit: It would be interesting to know whose choreography Tan and Helimets are dancing - presumably Tomasson's, since that is what they know well, but maybe not...

Sofiane Sylve may be dancing the role of Mercedes and/or Queen of the Dryads. In the Ballet Day on October 1, she did the rehearsal as Queen of the Dryads.

On a related topic, when National Ballet of Canada Director Karen Kain announced their 2015-2016 season, Karen said that they would be participating again in Ballet Day, so it looks like there is another one planned.
