NYCB Winter 2015 Season

Recommended Posts

Casting is up for week one of the season. R. Fairchild is cast in Serenade.

Some interesting debuts, especially for Lauren Lovette. She is debuting in the Cage (novice) and third movement of Symphony in C.

Thank you, abatt. Great casting for opening night! No Mariinsky for me that night.

Ooh, so excited I finally get to see Bouder live, in Donizetti variations.

I'm sure you'll love it Kaysta. Please report back. I'm going Sunday afternoon and looking forward to Lovette in Sym C third movement and also corp members Hod & Phelan in Agon

They needed a new lead in La Valse because Janie Taylor did all the performances of this ballet last time it was revived. Taylor was very, very good. La Valse was one of her signature roles. It will be intersting to see what Hyltin can do with the role.

Personally, I think Mearns or Tiler Peck could be fascinating in La Valse as a second cast, but I have no idea if they will be cast. NYCB will be doing Valse a number of times this season and in the Spring season, so I believe there will be a second cast after Hyltin this season.

I'm quite happy that the Mariinsky is coming to NYC, but I wish their visit overlapped with some of the awful programs at NYCB instead of the excellent All Balanchine programs during week 1.

According to an interview she gave to The Dance Enthusiast, Mearns is learning La Valse.

Wonderful to learn this--she certainly can dance as if "on the edge of a volcano" ...

Indeed! Mearns is a thrilling artist. Her love for ballet, music, the theatre --art in general-- informs all her performances. In the same interview she explains how Makarova (her role model) in a 1975 performance of Swan Lake "wanted everyone in the audience to go into the story." Mearns wants everyone in the audience to go into every ballet she dances in.

Heads up there is now a "buy 1 get 1 free" offer for NYCB. The code to use is SAW15. It's good for seats that are $134, $94 or $59. You can use it for the All Balanchine II, All Bach or All Balanchine III programs.

I just took advantage of that. It was an offer sent to subscribers. The performance I purchased 2/18 had very limited seating with the discount - orchestra, 1st and 2nd ring only. Still it's a good deal.

There are numerous casting changes for week no. 1.

Pereira replaces Bouder in Serenade.(Role debut for Pereira)

Bouder replaces Tiler Peck and Abi Stafford in the first movement of Symphony in C (Role debut for Bouder)

Lovette replaces Pereira in the Third Movement in Symphony in C (role debut for Lovette)

It's rare for Pereira to be cast in lead roles in Balanchine ballets. I hope she can make the most of this opportunity.

Thanks for the heads up abatt. I agree about Pereira. She hasn't made much progress as a dancer over the years so hopefully she'll have a breakthrough. Interesting that Bouder is replacing both T. Peck and A. Stafford in Symphony in C.

Thanks abatt. Once again they haven't updated the casting sheet. You have go into the date and "buy tickets" to see the changes.

I may be the sole voice of dissent but I really like Pereira. More, I think, than Lovette. I was very disappointed in Lauren's Nut. And I really dislike her Rubies. I think she's getting all these chances because NYCB wants to have a new Chase/Lovette pairing a la Robbie/Tiler or Suzanne/Peter, etc. I also hope she does well in these roles.

I don't know what the time lag was but the casting changes are online. You are right Amour, we disagree about Pereira, but I hope she does well. I didn't see Lovette's Nut or Rubies but have seen her give quality performances in many ballets. I can't imagine she's getting roles because of the PR of a relationship. That's pretty far fetched IMO.

Mearns is not the best technician in City Ballet's cadre of top principal women, but she brings a rich, dramatic quality to every role that she performs.

The casting changes seem to indicate the following dancers are out -- injured presumably, or possibly (Tiler Peck) occupied with other projects: Peck, Abi Stafford, Savannah Lowery (who debuted as the Russian Girl in Serenade within the past year) and Ashly Isaacs (does the Third Movement of Symphony in C; also she was replaced at the end of the Nutcracker season). Not to mention Ana Sophia Scheller who has been out for like 1.5 years now. (And Jennie Somogyi -- gone for awhile now, presumably injured?) Wow. A daunting way to start the season, and what a risky career. Enjoy your favorite dancers while you can!

Tiler Peck is still cast in Andantino, so unless they change that too, she seems to be in good health.

And Lowery is cast in the Cage. I'm not sure Russian Girl in Serenade was a good fit for her. Ask la Cour looked like it was tough going when he had to balance Lowery on his back in Serenade last season.

Mr. B's birthday extravaganza has gotten a wee bit smaller this season. For some time, an on stage demonstration was listed as part of the festivities for Jan 24. The demonstration was to take place between the matinee and evening shows at the Koch theater and was free, although a ticket was required. I had gone to these demonstrations during prior years and enjoyed them very much. Well, the on stage demonstration event has been removed from the schedule of events.

Yes, I looked for it too. I'm sorry it's been removed.

I looked too. That was actually my favorite part of the day, seeing the advanced SAB students doing class on stage. I thought there was an onstage presentation in the schedule with details TBD but it disappeared.

2nd week casting is up. Mearns and Tyler Angle are debuting in La Valse. Reichlin is debuting in Chaconne. Janzen is debuting in Cortege. Kikta is debuting as the Mother in the Cage. There are also numerous debuts in Goldberg Variations. Very exciting times at NYCB.

I am already missing the SAB students they’ve had in the past for “Saturday at the Ballet with George". Up until recently the website indicated that at 1:00 PM there would be 45 minutes of music with members of the NYCB orchestra on the promenade before the performance. Now that is gone off their website as well! Thanks to everyone for posting the cancellations! I am so glad I discovered it was cancelled before I showed up an hour early!
