Nutcracker 2014-15

Recommended Posts

As you may know, the casting is up for weeks one and two. The casting sheet has been updated online to indicate that Sara Mearns is replaced as Dew Drop for this week by Bouder. Mearns' twitter page indicates that she has been ill, but expects to return next week.

Bouder is going to have quite a busy weekend. She is dancing two Dew Drops and a Sugar Plum in the course of 3 days!

Does anyone have experience with standing room during Nutcracker? How often does it happen that they sell out and open standing room? I'm trying to find a way to go that's easy on the budget.

I don't know but you can probably find out by calling the Koch (212-496-0600).

Ashley Bouder did not dance the Sugar Plum Fairy last night. The casting in the lobby still listed her name when I left, and the internet casting has not been updated either, so I guess there is a question mark over today's Dew Drop.

I'm back from my first ever NYCB performance, and my first live viewing of The Nutcracker! It was an awesome experience, one that will stick with me for a very long time! But before I start my review, I should warn you I'm a newbie to the ballet world. My first live performance was only last year. I've become addicted since then, but having no dance background, I'm slowly learning terminology, and what turnout is, and what nice feet look like! So I can't can't critique anything.

Before I left, I was a bit disappointed that I wouldnt get to see Mearns dance Dewdrop. Then I was even more bummed when I read (on this thread) that I wouldnt get see Bouder either. But I shouldn't have worried, because Tess Reichlen filled in and she was absolutely joyful to watch. Her Dewdrop was the highlight of the whole thing for me. I also LOVED (I actually teared up it was so gorgeous) the waltz of the snowflakes. I've seen mostly ABT and PA ballet performances (and as I mentioned, I don't have the knowledge to truly critique) but the NYCB corps seems so much more polished and strong in comparison to the others. Maybe it's just a Balanchine thing?

Other highlights: Georgina Pazcoguin's solo! She was awesome. There was also a moment during the final Sugar Plum/Cavalier PDD where I accidentally gasped a wow out loud (sorry neighbors). Sterling Hyltin held a beautiful balance for what felt like forever (she also has amazing banana feet!)

I just want to finish my rambling by saying how thankful I am to have found ballet (and this website, which is helping me learn so much). I wish I could put into words what I felt when I was watching the Waltz of the Snowflakes. It really was an amazing, beautiful experience. It's amazing how these talented dancers can make you feel so much with each movement. My life is definitely richer with each performance I get to experience.

And I'm super excited about seeing more NYCB performances in the coming months. There's still so much I haven't seen yet! It's exciting! I'm actually debating whether to go see Nutcracker again this month.

I’m glad to know Teresa Reichlen was the replacement replacement Dew Drop today, since I loved her performance last night. Sometimes the holiday stars do not align to let us see precisely the ladies we might wish, but that’s where a further visit can be so helpful!

Kaysta, thank you for your report. Too see the Nutcracker with fresh eyes is a wonderful experience. I've always gone a few times each year. And every time I think that I'll zone out during Act I and perk back up for all the dancing in Act II. But I still get involved in all the storyline and action in Act I, that I don't zone out at all! And I can watch his second act again and again. I never tire of it (although I think I'm over Mother Ginger. I like the kids' dance but her exit takes forever!).

There is no clue from Ashley's Twitter page that she is either hurt or ill. As of last Wednesday, she announced she would be dancing Friday. Does anyone know if she danced Dew Drop?

I saw the opening night show on Nov 28, and Bouder did dance Dew Drop (brilliantly). I think they took her out of the weekend Sugar Plum on Nov 29 because she was filling in as Dew Drop (for Mearns) on Nov 28 and Nov 30. Hope you get to see the cast you want!

She didn't dance Dewdrop on Sunday. Teresa Reichlen did.

Thanks, Kaysta for the info. I keep checking Ashley's Twitter page and she's been tweeting, sounding cheerful but saying nothing about dance. I hope she's ok, health wise, both for her sake and for the selfish reason that I got a hugely expensive Nut ticket for the 12th in order to see her, De Luz, Ulbricht & Peirera (as Marzipan). I'll be very disappointed if Ashley doesn't dance.

Saw a highly enjoyable performance of Nutcracker yesterday (the 5pm show, with Reichlen, LaCour, and Hyltin as Dewdrop). Since I first saw Nutcracker, just a few short years ago, I've seen it I don't know how many times, and I still enjoy it so much. Thanks to the dancers and the musicians for keeping it fresh and magical for the audience! Teresa Reichlen was exquisite, the epitome of graciousness, while Ask LaCour was a fine partner (if a little less solid in his solo work). I enjoyed all the solos and divertissements. Austin Laurent was an especially "wooden" (ie effective) Soldier. Zachary Catazaro made Hot Chocolate pretty exciting with some high leaps. I know Robert Fairchild has many more challenging roles than Candy Canes, but I missed the huge leaps and principal-like charisma he brings to the role... whereas Troy Schumacher seemed to be struggling to keep up with the music. Sterling Hyltin is easily up to Dewdrop, but I wish she projected a little bit more. All in all, a very enjoyable show, and thanks to the box office for those relatively inexpensive partial-view seats!

Razor, the partial-view seats are about $38, depending on the balcony level, I think. You definitely miss part of the stage (if you want to see the Christmas tree grow, sit on the right side of the house), and some of the seats are awful, especially if you're short, but I've found it workable.

Thanks for posting, cobweb. I saw the same show and couldn't have been more pleased with the entire cast, Reichlin and Hyltin and LaCour especially. Judging from what I could see on the video screen on the promenade after the performance, Reichlin and LaCour did some sort of TV or perhaps AOL interview on stage. I don't know what it was for, but I thought it was very gracious of them to do it right after a performance.

Glad you at least got a Sugarplum replacement you're happy with, Amour. They do not seem to be updating the casting sheets at all on-line. The only way to see the cast change is to go into the program where you buy a ticket for that date, and the casting pops up for that date. Enjoy!

Actually, I think the price if the ticket depends on the cast. The tickets I got for the Lovette/Finlay Nutcracker were substantiallly less than the Bouder (now Tiler)/De Luz Nutcracker. The house is almost completely sold out for the latter and the available seats (in the 4th ring) are $71 -$91.
