Although he was probably best known as a director (Gandhi, Shadowlands), he was also a fine actor whose roles ranged from the commanding ‘Big X’ in one of my all-time favorite movies, The Great Escape (1963), to the milquetoast-ish Billy Savage in Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964).

RIP

I heard this earlier today, and was very sad -- he made some wonderful work.

There was a very nice tribute to Attenborough at this year's BAFTAs.
