Louisville Ballet names a new artistic director.

The Louisville Ballet announced Tuesday its new artistic director is former Australian Ballet dancer Robert Curran, who danced with that company for 16 years before retiring from the stage in 2011.

Related.

He also sees the development of new work as a key responsibility of the artistic director role, something Simpson made a priority during his 12-year tenure, during which he commissioned 15 of the company’s 70 world premieres, including choreographer Val Caniparoli’s revamped “The Brown-Forman Nutcracker,” which Curran praises as an example of how a classic can be re-fashioned to more deeply reflect the community in which it’s produced.

The Joffrey Ballet plans to live stream a rehearsal.

The Joffrey has said it will enhance the live stream experience by introducing Joffrey Artistic Director Ashley Wheater, who will host and moderate the event. Wheater will introduce Wheeldon to the viewing audience, and conduct brief interviews with some of the Joffrey dancers during rehearsal breaks — and presumably after they've had a minute or two to compose themselves.
