It's interesting to me that she has a need to declare an 'official' retirement. I rather thought she would dance intermittently, for however long she could still move about effectively - much like Plisetskaya. These days it seems everyone wants a farewell in Tokyo.

She may feel that she wants a formal ending for herself -- she is, after all, from the French school, and they're very respectful of those milestones.
