The last of the original Ramones is gone at age 65. Not such a good week. Maybe I really do want to sniff some glue....

Mr. Erdelyi played only on the band’s first three albums, “Ramones” in 1976 and “Leave Home” and “Rocket to Russia,” both from 1977. And he cut a much more easygoing figure than his bandmates, who despite their fraternal stage names were notorious for internecine feuds. Yet Mr. Erdelyi played a crucial role in the sound and early development of the band, which was started by the high school friends from Forest Hills, Queens.

Tommy Ramone played on the band's first three albums, co-producing two of them, before leaving in 1978, ostensibly because he was exhausted by the constant touring but later admitting that he had quit in reaction to being "physically threatened by Johnny, treated with contempt by Dee Dee, and all but ignored by Joey".

He was clever in the sense that the first three Ramones records are the best three. So, he got out before the Ramones sound hardened into a formula that was more like a straightjacket. He also got to avoid the immense internal strife of the Ramones with Joey and Johnny not speaking to one another and Dee Dee a chronic drug addict.

Good timing helps. I think Tommy's departure accelerated the tightening of that jacket - he played a big role in the studio as well. Interesting that the founding members all died relatively young (but only Dee Dee overdosed in the traditional rock manner).

And drummers are all about timing.

So true. At least Tommy lasted longer than your average drummer for Spinal Tap.

John Flansburgh writes on the group for Slate.

The influence of the Ramones is certainly musical—as much about reintroducing the charm of a short song as the power of a barre chord—but it goes far beyond music. A Ramones song cannot be unheard. The Ramones changed the pH balance of rock music’s pond water. Their existence challenged everyone else’s. They’re not part of a school. They built the building.
